to HRM or not

Post by rutledj »

Can someone tell me the tonal differences between the hrm and non-hrm?
Does one give a more "smoother" od than the other?

Also, what does the dlite version omit besides the hrm?

And, is the JFET ckt worth the effort?

Thanks,
Rut

If your a "tubescreamer" for solo kind of guy you want non-HRM - it is easy to get rich singing sustain. The HRM is less distortion like and much more dependent on touch for overdrive tonality.

Nope - use a 150K-200k on the dropping string to simulate the load. Buy a MXR microamp or equivalent Fet pedal if you really need a FET stage before the amp.

So would you say the HRM version has a smoother overdrive tone (less gritty/buzzy)?

A properly tweaked non-HRM is not gritty or buzzy but it is more distorted sounding at lower drive settings - in a good way. One cannot really imitate the other. The non-HRM emphasizes the mid harmonics more. To confuse you even more - Blues gig = non-HRM and Fusion gig = HRM of course this is just MHO.

OK. Let's narrow it down by artist's sound. Say recent Larry Carlton tone

I think for rock you may want to explore HRM but it will be necessary to use together with the PAB on. Think of the M in HRM. just my $0.02.

Birdies say that LC has a special style HRM. Not like the schematics here. Also not at all like the 80s circuit. ;)

In my experience the standard 80's style amp is far more forgiving, and has quite a bit more compressed overdrive. It's no where near the compression of say a Boogie, but still has alot more than the HRM.

I personally prefer the HRM, with that circuit you get 4 really distinct tones: Clean, boosted clean, non-boost OD, Boost OD

the 2 in the middle are great in-between tones because of the lower gain. The boosted OD is REALLY expressive in that you can pick lightly and the amp is almost clean, but lay into it and it just screams!

If you are not a "Touch" player you might not like the HRM. the non-hrm definitely has more of that liquid sustain.

Exactly right - a good non-HRM can be like using an E-Bow. Truely liquid guitar/Therimin(sp?) feeling when it's dialed in.

The first things I notice:

No gain trimmer

V2 Grids are reversed

So, Does this mean the topology goes Gain stage, tonestack/volume, recovery amp, gain stage HRM tonestack, gain stage?

The PAB also references ground, and the 2 22M's are tied.

I guess this means that the pic on the site is authentic. I have had it for a while. Funk is right btw. This is way different. Let's see what astute eyes point out..... ;)
