FINALLY an OD box that REALLY does Dumble tones!!!!

Post by tag101 »

Its all there...phasing, strainingg, note flipping. ..I am blown away! It kills my ethos and my old Zen drive, and is so good, it rivals 183 tones going into a fender Super reverb with a 2/12 ext cab. Its the mad professor sky blue overdrive, and I cant believe what I am hearing. Putting it into 183 and using the clean channel, its a toss up as to which tone is better. The 183s own drive channel or the MP into the clean side. Not sure what he has done, but the mad professor has truly lost his mind with this pedal, in a GREAT way! I put this against several other D style pedals side by side, and it was a no contest. Its very sensitive, and you can get a LOT of bad tones with it, but take your time, figure it out, and unreal tones await you. The only thing I could not do is get great tones out of the 4/10 super reverbs own cab. Just to much flub on the bottom, and to much fizz on the top. this has been my results with every pedal into a super, so nothing new there. Put a 2/12 extenstion cab on it, and instant magic! Here is the very first clip I attempted with it, and listen to the vowel, phasey like sounds at around 17-21 seconds in for starters, but cool tones all over IMO. LOVE IT!!! :D Please give one a good, long try and let me hear your thoughts. This is the first time in over 30 years of playing, I can say an OD box is standing toe to toe with the best tube overdrive tones i know of. I thought the day would never come.

To get that tone just use a Zendrive with slight delay on a Boss DD3 about as close as your going to get.

The Mad Professor Golden Cello sounded good too.

Hey Mr Fowler! I used that combination, (Sold the Zen, still have the ethos) and my ethos and DD2 and DD3 as well. Trust me, the sky blue kills them! It does something to the mids that neither the ethos or Zendrive can touch. I have them right here. I just ordered the Blue sky on ebay 5 minutes ago, and I would NOT be paying $300 for a pedal if it was not far superior to the ethos which I have. (I have Mcdaddys Blue sky drive who lent it to me) The golden cello sounds cool too, but seems more Marshall than dumble to me. Give the sky blue a try, you have nothing to lose and a lot to gain! I will do a clip comparing the Blue sky and 183s OD tones. They are SOOO close, and its hard to choose one over the other. Whats amazing is i think the Blue sky FEELS just as good. You know I am a HUGE Dumble fan, and a 183 fanatic. i would not be saying this if I was not totally floored. its that good! It can save people THOUSANDS and THOUSANDS of dollars, with really NO sacrifice in tone. I think it sounds better than every clone I have owned with the exception of the Quinn, and sounds pretty much just as good as that! Insanity! You just have to be patient and dial it in very carefully. Also needs a good Blackface or Dumble style clean amp with 12" speakers, NOT 10s. Back to playing, I cant stop! :)

Good thing I'm not rich I would have the Strymon Flint, Ola, Lex, and El Capistan great products from that company.

Tag I will have to check out McDaddy's website again was there not so long ago but don't remember the Bluesky pedal.

Very impressive clip.
What speakers in 2x12 cab?
Controls on pedal set at 10-11:30 like in the photo?

Curious about the new Van Weelden Royal Overdrive, should give you the brown sound and the dumble sound regardless what kind of amp you put it in front (solid state or tube). But it comes at 595 euro's which is roundabout a dumble clone in parts if your handy.

Another very nice sounding pedal...
Crap I might give up tube amps and start building pedals...

Mark,
I dont think McDaddy has a website, he is a member here and bought 183 from me. He loaned the pedal to me, but mine is on its way! Its a Mad Professor sky blue overdrive, hand wired  pedal. Go to the mad professor web site. Some cool and different things going on with this thing. It describes them at the site. here is the link

Thanks! :) Its a mesa 4/12 with celestian G12H30 anniversary speakers, and I plugged into the 2/12 input. (It allows you to run 4 speakers or 2 via different inputs)

Just for the record, the Mad Professor is a crazy person (in the best sense of the term). The amps are totally sick, too.

That is an impressive sound from a pedal. The Tasty Guitar chops also help.
