calling Normster and dogears
Hey Norm or Scott I would really like to try the xicon MPP caps, The ones Ive seen in Norms builds the blue ones. I have looked on Mouser's site and cannot find some of the smaller value caps like .01, .002 .0047 and.001 did you get these from mouser. If you did a part number would be greatly appreciated . Also what does MPP stand for Metalized polyester, or metalized polypropalene. a bit confused on the issue. I really like the PS series spragues but want to try the Xicons to compare. Oh this amp will be going to Craig Bartock currently playing with Heart so I want to do one with the MPP's to hear the differance and give him the best of the two. Thanks Guys

Check with AES www.tubesandmore.com for Xicon's. These are the Metalized PolyProp and are maroon in color, not blue like the polyester although the polyesters are not bad, the polyprop are better (IMO).talbany wrote:Hey Norm or Scott I would really like to try the xicon MPP caps, The ones Ive seen in Norms builds the blue ones. I pretty much use 6PS exclusively. Haven't tried the MPP's yet. The last time I looked, Mouser still had the MPP's but they change their inventory a lot.

Unfortunately, I have a feeling we may see MPP's disappear as they are not RoHS compliant.Normster wrote:I pretty much use 6PS exclusively. Haven't tried the MPP's yet. The last time I looked, Mouser still had the MPP's but they change their inventory a lot.
The 6PS is a good capacitor in these circuits and I will probably change over in time to the 6PS (unless XICON come out with a RoHS compliant MPP and PP line).

It is interesting that the SBE 6PS (polyster) work well and the XICON PP and MPP (polyprop) lines work well in these circuits.
But the 715's and 716's (polyprop) are a little (lot) over the top and the XICON polysters are not quite so right. Go figure.

MPP Caps
Gary I was Thinking the same thing. I hate the 715 and 716 seems to have that grainey buzzy top end thing so many people talk about. for the longest time I used mallory 150's as per Mr' Fisher's recommendation (RIP). though they lack the strident mid range for rock stuff. Was just wondering if the Xicon polyesters are smooth like the mallorys and Ps caps and still have the articuliate open mid rangey tone. I also wonder if we could get enough people on the forum to place in order for some SBE ps caps and see if we can order them in bulk for a great price. Count me in. If we do I will look into how many we need to get to make it worth while.

Sounds good to me talbany!

I use the PS as they are a known good quantity! Why bother messing with anything else.

						PS Caps
I totally agree Scott the Ps series are the most natural sounding I have heard so far. I will look into seeing how many caps we need to order to get direct to SBE. I hear if we order enough we can have them say anything we want on them. How about Tone Drops.

Wasn't it you that told me about the MPP's???? I tested them and I agree, they sound almost the same.
The issue I have with the 6PS is the size. The MPP's are much smaller and easier to fit into tight spaces. I agree with Gary though, without RoHS compliance they'll go away.
Re: calling Normster and dogears
Problem with the MPP is that I can't get caps lower than .01

Re: calling Normster and dogears
I think I'll put one of each type in my next build. Maybe if I mix them up enough it'll balance out.

Sure you can. AES has .001 .0022 and .0047.dogears wrote:Problem with the MPP is that I can't get caps lower than .01

Re: calling Normster and dogears
Try the type 225p for tight spaces, they sound almost identical to 6PS and are QUITE a bit smaller. I see them in LOTS of newer amps, and have had many successful builds using them.

Not in MPP, the lower values are PP variety only. I don't find a problem mixing the PP's and MPP's.
