chassis thickness??...
What's the thickness of steel chassis you guys are using?. and what's the recomended size of a normal chassis hxwxd??. thanks a lot!!
Re: chassis thickness??...
I have no idea about the steel chassis, but the dimensions for a Dumble chassis have been posted as 19"x8"x2.5" using 1/8" aluminum. (Funkaliciousgroove has done his homework on the chassis so hopefully he can confirm.)
Morgan Jones mentions avoiding steel as a chassis material in one of his books, but I've gotten good results using a Bassman chassis, so who knows. My favorite material to work with is .080" - .090" aluminum. Plenty sturdy, easy to work with, and thin enough to add a faceplate without using those expensive mil spec pots.

I made my chassis from 1/8" aluminium (3mm). It's 20"x10"x2.6". A bit too wide I found out, but it's always nice to have enough space. 8" would be enough..

Important design tip: Alpha pots (commonly used around here) will just clear 1/8" stock. If you add a metal faceplate, you will probably need pots with longer threaded sleeves. Some of the Marshall-style jacks are also thickness-challenged.

Re: chassis thickness??...
The dimensions referenced above where the ones used by my partners in crime and I back in 1999, when we had the first batch of clone chassis made. I laid out and made the drawing for the chassis, and chose 1/8" because I wanted the thing to be built like a tank... and so it was. Now, later in life I was able to look at a couple of actual D chassis and their thickness was less than 1/8" -- obvious to the naked eye. As someone already posted, using 1/8" thickness will barely allow for Alpha pots to fit through and thread.Normster wrote:I have no idea about the steel chassis, but the dimensions for a Dumble chassis have been posted as 19"x8"x2.5" using 1/8" aluminum.
