Ben Harper Dumble "Collection"

Post by ElectronAvalanche »

Whilst searching for something else, I found this:

http://www.fretboardjournal.com/photos/ ... id-lindley

Very nice high-resolution pics of #109 (exterior only) and the Lindley ODSs.

Cheers,

Electron

Very cool! What is that last slide switch after the Level on Lindley's snake skin ODS?

Here's a pic I took in Santa Monica (Nov 2008)
One of Ben Harper's Dumbles. ¨
He shared the stage with Ry Cooder and Bonnie Raitt among others (Jackson Browne Benefit Concert).

Cool stuff.

The material that was used on Davids Dumbles was bought at K-Mart according to David. I guess he still has several yards in his workshop for use someday.

What you don't see in the pictures is the "unmarked" pot on the back of the amps. It is on the preamp end and adjusts the FET preamp. The ODS that David still has in his collection has the NOR input taped up and he only uses the FET input on the amps.

The one I want to see is his Dumble Bass amp, no pictures of it as far as I know, but he says it sounds like god almighty.

That looks like one of Jackson Brownes amps. The only I every saw with that configuration on the OD plate loads. Hmmm could it be..

Another nugget of non-sense. Talking with Jackson Browne last year after his show in Vegas and we got talking about heir Dumble. His said once of his biggest complaints with the big guy was he could never make two amps that sounded the same (David L was nodding in agreement). The second thing both of them told me is that neither would EVER leave an amp, they will sit and wait for the repair or mod to be completed.

Gary what is different about the OD plates?

Looks like the typical RN65D resistors.
Grid stoppers appear to be the ones we've seen elsewhere.

Tony is that the only picture of that amp you have?

Orientation on the board. Also look at the layout of the cathode resistors. This is somewhere between the old old and newer layouts he used. Only have seen this layout in JB's amp.

I'm no expert, but the only possibly unusual component may be the resistor in the treble peaker on the grid of V1B. It doesn't look like 220k, but I can't see it well enough to read it.

I see a resistor and ceramic cap there but I can't make out the color code.
Almost looks like there is a grey band there.

What is the feedback resistor there? Almost looks like 2K6.

Is this a 100w amp?

Maybe the red bands are just hidden under the cap/heater wires.

Or maybe...

Just Kidding

One more thing: the coupling cap on V1B is definitely not .05 like in most Classics. It's even smaller than the PI input (presumably .02),yet larger than V2B (presumably .005),and similar to V2A which makes me guess it's a .01 like 2nd/3rd generation amps.

He was usually consistant about orienting the resistors all one way, probably to read them easier or just OCD.

Gary

At first I'd heard the same JB's amp..Even some speculation that it was the amp used by Robben on Cannonball..Scott had mentioned that the amp was now in Ben's hands..I am not sure if Jackson sold Ben the amp or how he got it..But given that Ben and Dave are obviously tight would make sense..
Here is another shot of the amp..Presence control on the board and wait a minute...OMG!!!..NO PI Balance..
