Stage naming?

Post by Tdale »

Short question..

Is the first stage called V1a or V1b? On some schematics, it looks like the first stage is called V1b, even if V1a would be the logical name..

How do you usually name the stages?

Tube pinouts were standardized and dictated by the manufacturer or EIA (Electronic Industry Association) years ago. Looking at a typical layout, the A side is on the left, B is on the right. The B side that contains pins 1,2, and 3 are on the right side (correct side) of the input when performing a layout. It wouldn't matter much at all if you wired the A side as your first stage, except wires would be crossed over each other. Wiring the B side as the first stage makes for a neater and easier to follow layout. however, If you're really concerned about the A vs. B, thing, then rotate the socket 180 degrees.

Another question...why is V1 on the right, shouldn't it be on the left? (just joking) cheers BobW

In my book, V1a is the 1st stage... Always. Regardless of socket wiring. I think we should pass a law here to that effect. Keep sthings less confusing.

I name them CL1 and CL2 for the clean channel, OD1 and OD2 for the overdrive channel. It depends on the side I mount the input jack if CL1 is V1a or V1b. V1a is pins 1 2 and 3, V1b is pins 6 7 and 8. I always start at the pins closest to the input jack.

For example my Hybrid has the input jack to the right so I started CL1 on V1b, pins 6 7 and 8 are closer to the jack. On the Peavey transplant the input jack is to the left so CL1 is V1a, pins 1 2 and 3.

I hope that helps.

I see..

I find it confusing that they are named several ways. CL1 and CL2 is fine, but to me, V1a will always sound like stage 1, no matter what pins are connected.

An a is pins 1, 2, and 3. A b is 6, 7. and 8. The b section is lower noise historically, so you want the first stage the input sees to be V1b.

OK..

Still a source to confusion, since not all use the b part for their first stage.
