First D Style Build

Post by jborders5 »

I finally finished my first D style build and wanted to say thanks to all of the contributors on the forum. It started out as a pretty straight forward HRM-101 build with reverb, but I’ve been tweaking various sections over the last few months. Thanks again for all of the great info.

That is a beautiful piece of work. Very well done! Where did you have your PCBs made? How does she sound? Your layout is very neat, really nice.

+1! Excellent build! Where did you get that rubber wire "conduit"? That makes a very neat, professional appearance. Whose chassis is that? RJ?

Thanks for the comments.

I use Pad2Pad for smaller quantities of PC Boards. I purchased a few sets to keep the costs down and have extras available if someone wants to work them into their build. They're all .094 thickness with 2 ounce copper traces. The power supply is a Precision PS with FRED diodes and an extra string for verb or internal dlator. The power supply grounds are also separate (B+1&2, B+3, B+4&5, Verb) to allow you to use a multi-point star layout. The Bias/Relay PS Board uses a RC-2 bridge rectifier and TO-220 package voltage regulator.

The "conduit" is actually 20 gauge solid core tightly wrapped around the signal wires. It can offer some shielding if you ground one end, but I didn't need to as the amp is pretty quite even at high gain settings.

The chassis is a generic 20X8X2.5 from Watts Tube Audio http://www.turretboards.com/guitar_ampl ... _blank.htm

Very nice! :D

Who made the faceplate?

What does the toggle switch on back do?

Looks like the toggle on back is for power and the one on front is for standby. The small one on the preamp side appears to switch the local feedback on CL2.
Wife: How many amps do you need?

Correct... The mini toggle is a 3 way with the middle position OFF, up is HIGH and down is LOW local feedback. I find with this build the switch is OFF 99.9% of the time. I added it since I wasn't going for a 100% accurate build and local feedback is not commonly found on HRM style amps.

The faceplate is from http://www.amplates.com/faceplates.html . Joe is very easy to work with and was quick at producing and shipping the control plate.

I did the same thing with the feedback on my first non-HRM. I either use it on "low feedback" or "no feedback" settings. The "high feedback" is a little too sterile sounding for me.

That is a sweet looking build.
Wanted to ask where the cool yellow board is from?
Also relays on the hrm board....what going on with those?

Looks great and look like you have some creative ideas going on too.

What value do you use for the low feedback levels?

Could you post a couple hi res photos of the interior please? :D

I like to look at the detail. Very nice construction techniques.

The yellow main board is bulk stock from Watts (same source as the chassis noted above).

The relays are for the tone stack bypass and OD.
