Gutshot Pics of John Mayers two-rock?

Post by topbrent »

I was surfing google last night and within a few clicks found myself looking at what is claimed to be a John Mayer custom Two-Rock.

Nice sounding amp. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VG_hBD_Smkg

It isn't in a production JM chassis, but the controls and function seem to be along the same lines as his amp. Supposed to be the prototype.

What circuit hints can be deciphered from these pics?

Looks like a presence of some sort or a cut function labeled contour, and simplified controls for the OD...which looks to possibly be always on. Simple in and out fx Loop. No relays that I can see, but the yellow 5v leads on the PT are connected to something.

Those look like 100k's on the plates of V1 and V2.

One surprising detail, to me at least, is the use of Illinois electrolytic caps.
As far as I know these don´t have the best reputation.Any comments?

I read somewhere, maybe Gerald Weber, not sure, but the opinion was that they are more economical and lack in quality and sound. I stay away from them.

I've found that sometimes they are out of spec right from the start. But, if you check them, I've also found their ripple current is as good or even better than several of the "accepted" brands.

I disagree about Illinois caps being bad and they can be found in many builds. I use them when the application calls for them or right value price dictates.

Well, for a very expensive amp, you would think they would use the very best quality parts.
It seems they are more interested in the bottom line rather than dependability of there products.

Seems most of the boutique guys are using F & T or Spragues because they have a track record.
With the Chinese stuff you never know from part to part if it is within tolerance or even viable when you receive them.

I don't know if that is the same amp as the John Mayer Sig amp but the Sig amp is $8,500 !!!!!!

You would think for that kind of money you would see some gold plated Sprague Atoms in there.

The Custom Reverb Sig model which is what the amp above is, is only $5,000 so you can't expect for that kind of money anything but cheap import parts...... :?
