trust me a single EVM12 cab will give you all the power you'll ever need, I would make a single, sealed ported Larry Carlton cab and stick with EVM in there.
Try that for a while and then see if you think you need a 2x12. I have the oval backed 2x12 dumble can with two vintage G12-65's it's a great cab and speaker combo for a dumble amp. it's what Robben ford has used for years. It's big and heavy though so I prefer the EVM, which is small and heavy

Thanks Marcus. You got me really curious on the Classic Lead 80 and why I wanted to give it a try.
I am usually into 2x12 because I think they have more low end because they are bigger but I have never tried the small sealed ported 1x12 like Larry Carltons, could be an option too. How do you think it copes with the low end vs the 2x12?
Another think is that if you get the option to use each of the 2x12 speaker individually you can potentially have 2 heads plugged into 1 cab and a stereo rig

the sealed ported cab has a very controlled but full low end, the 2x12 can get a bit overblown if you're not in the right environment, and if you're playing with a band you don't generally want a lot of low end. It might sound great by yourself but in a band situation you'll be rolling it off. If you look at the controls on my amp when it came back from Larry, you'll see the bass is backed off to 3.
Stereo 2x12 is cool, but you have to make sure you have speaker s that can handle the wattage individually. The classic 80 with a 50w head is fine, I wouldn't pair it with an EVM though from a sound point of view personally. The alnico cream is a nice speaker and a ceramic/alnico combo is a popular one.
I'd build the Larry Carlton sealed, ported cab for the EVM and put the classic lead 80 in a separate Dumble oval backed 1x12 cab. That's what I did, the 1x12 classic lead 80 is a great cab with a 50w amp. There are plans on the forum for the 1x12 oval back cab.

That would be great but I think I can only justify 1 new item at home (being it a 1x12 or a 2x12)....How does the 1x12 oval backed compare to the ported cab? If you could choose only one which would you go for?
I've got both. The sealed cab gives you that pressure wave push in the trousers that a 4x12 gives you and is friendlier to other band members as the sound is more directional. The oval backed cab is a great alternative, I put celestion classic lead 80's in them ..the 16 ohm version...spent a day with a pile of speakers and that was the best, and the 16 ohm sounded better than the 8 ohm with my #102.

I've looked and can't find any EV12M for sale, EV only sells their speakers inside speaker cabinets nowadays. Where do you get them? Ebay or some such?

Do you mean EVM-12L? It's available all over the net. Even Amazon has them.

Man for an IT nerd, my google fu failed me there. I think I just searched for EV Speakers in varying formats without specifying the model number lol! Thanks

I'd go for a used one if you can. I don't like the new ones. There's a you tube video of a comparison between a whole boat load of different EVM 12-L's and it's very interesting.
even with the you tube sound you can hear a lot of difference between the different versions.

p.s. The EVM12-S is also the same speaker more or less just smaller front to back dimensions, I like these speakers too and I've found they're generally more readily available.
Cool thanks, I'm not sure yet that I want to spend again on speakers, I just put out a decent amount for a Celestion Alnico gold and celestion creamback for my 2x12 I built. I'll have to maybe look for that build later its like 270$ for one new, I may find a better deal on used, (The damn things look like ceramic too, that's almost the price of an alnico, is it worth that?)
If you're going to make/play Dumble amps you have to have an EVM in your arsenal. They're made for each other. I'm sure you can pick up a used EVM for $150 or less.
I'd say they're a better choice than the alnicos. I like the Alnicos with my Rocket. A muscular amp like a 100w ODS really deserves an EVM. You get a lot of sound from an EVM12 1x12 cabinet.
I have tried a lot of speakers with the D amps, and one you should consider is the Emi Swamp Thang - you can pick them up new for like $100. I had mine (16R) in a TL806 cab and it never disappointed with clean or OD running 100w into it.
I did not like the EVM except at loud gig volumes, no character of its own, which may or may not suit you, and it weighed a ton!
Another speaker I am now using with my 35w 6L6 Tweedle Dee is the Celestion Neo Creamback 16R - I think I love it equally to a good G12-65. Worth considering for, say, an open back 2x12 - pine would make it lightweight! My 2 Euro cents - I'm in Finland
Also bear in mind, the new G12-65's sound awful until they're really broken in, again I'd buy and old one, completely different speaker when it's had 1000 of hours into it.
strangely the classic lead 80 doesn't seem to suffer from this as much, go figure.
Speakers are a real personal choice and one of the biggest tonal changes you can experiment with.
