Why do you think HAD put that grounded shielding tape under the FET input circuit?
Also, very nice work Tony, Thanks again!

Some minor things: the presence cap still says .1uf though (should be 1uf), the bass lead from the Jazz/Rock switch should go to the top of the bass pot, not the wiper, and the yellow leads from the treble pot to the PAB relay and back don't quite connect.talbany wrote:Since it does effect tone I changed the layout like 124 with the plate cathodes run together.. I even made them the same color as 183..Rev 6 up..
Thanks to all those who looked over the layout..
Tony
Thank you!
chris
Thx.. When I changed the preamp boost forgot to move the top part of the wire..

About the 250k drive pot, it works just like any volume control.
You got more output and less highs when you go up in value, so
more gain and less harshness but it may be muddy if you go too high.
It's more about output impedance than miller effect I think, I usually
give more concern about it on the input of a tube grill with its lower
impedance.
Thanks Tony for those layouts and your overall contribution here.

Re: Layout 5th Generation 183
That's just a little shield from EMI, and is used on amps with the wood end panels. The idea is similar to shielding the control cavity on your guitar. The all-metal chassis amps don't have this shielding.CHIP wrote:Why do you think HAD put that grounded shielding tape under the FET input circuit?

Thanks Chris,
Another question, Are those NTE caps on the pre amp board Polyprop. or polyester?

Re: Layout 5th Generation 183
I believe they are Mylar which is the brand name for polyester.

Re: Layout 5th Generation 183
My Quinn TKT183 is finally on the way! I will post clips of both it, Brads TKT and the real 183 on this thread when it arrives. Should be about 5 days. Great point of reference for all to shoot for when trying to nail the tone of this beast. It would be cool to have a specific thread where the real 183 clips were posted, then anyone who completes a build could post their clips right alongside the real thing. It would be very interesting to see if anyone can actually get the magical tones (phasing, note flipping, and human vowel sounds) of that bad boy all in one amp.
I am really hoping the mighty Quinn will do it. I will find out very soon.

Re: Layout 5th Generation 183
IMO it wouldn't be a general problem if someone shouldn't succeed to put all the magic in just one magic box. If so, some kind of multi-amping approach like the one of Carlos Santana or SRV could perhaps solve the problem. But the costs would be of course a bit higher if someone should need several different amps - one for the phasing, one for the note flipping, and one for the human vowel sounds (just as an example).Mr Dumble wrote:It would be very interesting to see if anyone can actually get the magical tones (phasing, note flipping, and human vowel sounds) of that bad boy all in one amp.
But such a kind of "#183 Cloning World Championship" would perhaps be very entertaining indeed.
Cheers,
Max

Re: Layout 5th Generation 183
Concerning such a world championship it may perhaps be important to keep in mind how close the relationship between tone and (emotional, musical, etc.) content often is - as is shown as an example in this demonstration of a more "woody" tone in comparison with a more "tinny" tone: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T70-HTlKRXo
