Eric Clapton's August Album used 2 Sessionette 75 SS amps
Also, Phil Keaggy has used solid state amps for many years, starting with the Yamaha G100, most recently I've seen him using a CyberTwin...

Lonnie Mack used Roland Jazz Chorus

Mike Stern uses Yamaha and Pearce amps, also all solid state.

Iron Maiden Somewhere in Time and 7th Son (Gallien Krueger Amps)

Billy Gibbons My Head's in Mississippi (Marshall Lead 12)

Ty Tabor - First 4 King's X Albums ( Lab Series L5/7)
BB King used Lab Series as well

Wes Montgomery later career (standel Super Custom XV)

Tom Petty - Known to use the Vox Super Beatle on many occasions

Rolling Stones - Let It Bleed, Beggar’s Banquet, Rock’n’Roll Circus (Triumph Silicon 100 also used VOX conqueror/Defiants on Rock'n'Roll Circus)

All that and you've heard the Roland JC-120 on countless recordings for clean sounds.

Page used the Rickenbacker Transonic (SS) for their 1st American tour in 1969. There is rumor that that amp was used for the Heartbreaker session as well. Led Zeppelin simply left these amplifiers behind on their trip back to England

Martin Barre (Jethro Tull) used Marshall 15-watt tube practice amps on Crest of a Knave and Rock Island, according to his website. Doesn't say which ones they were, though. Says he also used six of them live.

It's also rumored Eric Clapton used an old tweed champ on many recordings..

Randy Rhodes used a SS Pignose for a preamp into his Marshalls

AFAIK Billy Gibbons road rig has not 1 tube in his power amps

Jack Pearson used his Yamaha SS 100 and a sans amp on his do it right album and got some IMO very nice tones

I am sure many would consider some of these amps inferior tone generators

Tony
More inferior tone generators :

Page used a solid state AC30 for some Zep studio stuff

Brian May used a homemade SS amp in the studio a lot.

John Fogerty used SS Kustom amps with Credence live almost exclusively I think and for recording a lot.

Hello Tag
I dont see the amp I metioned, but in any case, your point is???
I didn't quote your post and wasn't refrencing your Sears/Blackface comparison, rather pointing out some surprising amp choices made by some famous artists..Draw your own conclusions.
Do you think the above solid state amps have better clean tones than a BF Fender?
I have not played all the above amps, so I don't know..I have used the Jazz chorus in a backline rental on a few gigs and didn't care for it ..but it got me paid..
Is your main amp a SS amp? Please be honest.

At this time I own no Solid State amps.. Here is a shot of my personal collection,,, Built them all.. 2 Music Man Non HRM, Bluesmaster, 2nd generation, low plate classic w/ KT-88, 100w HRM, Twreck Express
The company I started VVT Amps makes other amps as well

Comments like, "It will blow the shit out of those two Dumbles" are inflamatory. All they do is tick some people off.
What I'm getting out of this thread is your personal opinion is only that. It's YOUR OPINION.
If EVERYONE in the world agreed with you that the guitar tone that you have decided is the ULTIMATE TONE, man would that be BORING.
I like the tone of #183
I also like putting on some CCR recordings, and listening to that old SS Kustom tone.
I liked when Lennon and Harrison played those Casino's though those Vox's
I liked when I'd hear Skynyrd playing through those Peavey Maces.
I could go on and on.

On the truck and should be here Tuesday! :) :) :)

EDIT: And I GUARANTEE it will blow the shit out of those two old Dumbles. :P  :)
Of course it will, as - at least IMO - it isn't really that probable that your personal taste in regard to what kind of guitar tone you like will change that much until Tuesday. So what you garantee is what I would call a self fulfilling prophecy.

I hope so!

But however: Much fun with your newest toy!
Cheers,

Max

Thanks Max.

Thanks for the answers!

Then I will add. Michael Schenker used a Pignose (the larger one. Solid state??) on the lights out album. My favorite recorded tones by him.

In response to several PM's I received concerning my post on various amps used by those listed in my interesting info post..

Let me clarify this and make this clear.. My post was NOT intended to place these amps in a negative light or to inflict my opinion here.. It was merely to inject a little perspective..

To Elaborate
Although I agree with the comment that Tag made about comparing the sonic qualities between a BF Fender and a SS Sears amp( being most players choosing the BF in most cases) I also believe the Sears amp and everything in between has a place in the tonal spectrum when creating music. When tone clearly is intended to inflict an image or an attitude or personality..

For those who care to hear my opinion on this here goes..
Look at the big picture!!.. An amp that might sound rather bad to you sitting on the floor plugged straight in might in your opinion not project the proper sound or image you perceive as pleasing..
Now give the same amp to someone else who has the ability and talent to combine that sound with a certain style of music where the end result is unique and works. it paints an image an attitude that connects with you, then put it all in perspective ,the sound of the amp with the music listen to the bigger picture and wala you get art!!..(This was the basis for my post.. so please read between the lines)

P.S This became obvious to me on a Who DVD that was released shortly after Entwhistles death, Where they added an iso track on him in a live version of Baba Riley.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Lf10U0yZrs

To me it sounded like crap!! distorted bass lines w/high end.. Now place it in the mix with the rest of the band and it works and in Johns case worked rather well... There are people who have the uncanny ability of taking a certain guitar tone (what we perceive good or bad) making it their own, recording it, placing the right music to it, and creating something special.. Max's mention of Jack White is a good example as well as Kurt Cobain (even playing out of tune)..Also the people I mention above also had this ability..This is what I think of when someone tries to tell me what's good and what's bad sounding..

Jack

I Hope this Helps!!

Yeah, I really really enjoyed "it might get loud".

Jack is a very unique guy.

I friggin' loved it when Jimmy started blasting Whole Lotta Love. :D

+1000 on that and everything else Jimmy played. His tones are awesome!

I was quite unimpressed with JW. He looked like he was a kid being schooled. From my point of view, there was clear envy shown by JW and Edge.

Chip, just remember that chatting w/someone who is terminally ego-centric means his posts are all about him, not you or anyone else (attempting to compensate for something else lacking in his life). As I said before, ignore 'it' and it will eventually grow-up or go away. Cheers

Tony, I think most of us saw it as a little perspective as well, nothing inflammatory. 8)
