I remember asking Jelle that some time ago about OTs and he said, not necessarily, both can sound good in their own way. I think that he was also putting it in the context of different topologies, but he didn't say so and I didn't think to ask at the time.

Has me thinking...I have a NOS Bassman 70 PT, export tapped. If I teamed that up with a pair of KT88s and a 70W OT of suitable primary impedance, I might have a very nice two tube powerhouse.
Hey Dave..
Yeah I agree with Jelle ... There are quite a few variables to consider with OPT's in this case.. I used to think yeah get the biggest most expensive transformer is always best and in lessons learned that's just not always the case.. For me it has to do mostly with that amps design and speaker configuration and if you want to factor in OPT regulation (and Tone of coarse) or if you want those anomalies associated (which some players prefer), like comression less punch and kind of smoothness which then of coarse has to do with weather you design the amps tone around a more pushed output section that kind of stuff..A big part of the ODS tone resides in it girth and punch so OPT regulation is not for me a large part of the equation there as much as say tone.. although you can factor in a certian amount (smaller larger core different wire etc..) if you so desire..
Hope this helps..
BTW.. Broken in or seasoned iron can experience more regulation over time than new iron which some people also prefer.. IMO
