I got my ported cabinet today! I'm glad I had one built for me as I don't have the proper wood working equipment to make a good one myslef. Also, I found it difficult to find information on a Dumble style cabinet with the round ports. Internet and forum searches are clouded with hits dealing with the more popular TL806 Thiele cabinet.

In fact while searching I even found an old post from dogears inquiring about the Dumble round-port cabinet:
This [TL806 diagram] is the design for an open port bass reflex cab. It is not the design for the dual tuned port Thiele box than Dumble favored. Maybe someone here has those plans....
So, I had Brandon make a cabinet for me. He knew the design that I wanted and delivered a good product (though I presume someone else made the cabinet for him).

I suspect there are a number of you that also can supply these cabinets. Feel free to post what you have to offer on this thread. I think 'build threads' like this serve as an important source of information for those who are in the planning stages of building an amp (over 8000 views for this thread so far).

A while back I was watching Larry Carlton's website videos and came across this quote on one of the videos. It really sold me on that style of cabinet.
This is truly one of the finest speaker cabinets I have ever heard. This is a single 12" closed back cabinet specially tuned with two cylindrical baffles. If there is any way you can get one I would highly recommend doing so. --Rick Wheeler

My neighbors were moving and nice enough to give me a 12-string acoustic. Since I don't have one I was glad to be on the receiving end of that gift. It took a while to set it up. I even had to shave the bridge and re-burnish it to get the action acceptable. Here it is with the HRM amp:

That link didn't work for me.

When I looked at your channel I didn't see the 12 string video.

Or is the LP one?

In keeping true to 'All things Dumble' both fact and fiction, I saw a reference that the original Dumble ported enclosure came with a shielded jack ( http://www.roblivesey.com/dumble/ ). Of course there is no need for shielding, but the shielded jack does provide a theoretical more air-tight seal than an open Switchcraft jack.

Anyway, I put it on my replica cabinet.

One more tweak to this amp. A new guitar! I was feeling like the only person in the world without an ES335, so I finally got one. This amp really sounds great with an ES335.

The ES335 I got was a 'Craigs list special' that needed some work but was pretty inexpensive.

First thing I noticed was the pots were all wrong. Someone tried to replace one pot and really butchered the rest of it. Only one pot was good, that was a 300k vol. pot. But I wanted to change to 500K all the way around. So, I needed 4 new pots. Grounds were loose, there were extra wires. One pot measured 7Meg! (Heat damage?). Wires were fried. Wires were broken loose at their connections. Only two of 4 wires still holding on to the selector switch. One pot had a broken shaft and one pot was a cheap aftermarket pot.

Laugh at me for spending $$ on "Gibson" pots, but when the guitar only was $1000, I can afford $50 for overpriced pots.

Before and after pictures of the wiring harness:

I was looking for a project guitar that might need a neck repair, fret work, finish work etc. It turns out after re-doing the electronics on this one, the rest of it is near perfect!

Nice
I got a ES335 cheap on craigslist/kijiji recently too. I also replaced the electronics right away. 300K pots and cheap little ceramic caps

The finish is very good, does not even have any belt-buckel marks. The nickel hardware was corroded, but nickel gets that way. The strings I like to use need to have the G-string saddle all the way back sometimes, to get intonation. By reversing the bridge, there is more backward motion for the adjustment. I re-did all the notches. I was going to get a new set of saddles, but you can't get the nickel saddles, so I'll keep these.

Has anyone tried this setup with the little caps and the bypass resistors? I made the resistor/cap assemblies and but wanted to try the guitar without them first. I think I can solder those on through the f-holes and not have to take everything out again.

Re pickups with little caps and bypass resistors. Yes, have that in a dual humbucker guitar (Korean Fender Squire, RF Klon) with 500k pots. However, after some eksperimentation, I arrived at slighly different values, namely 250k resistor paralleld by a 1n cap (.001uf). Works like a charm.

MOD1: After using the typical gibson setup for a while (dual volume and dual tone), I converted to (tele-like) 1 master vol and 1 master tone control instead. So i only use the 'old rythm' volume and tone as masters. This mod is a players mod, that makes IMO the guitar (335 or Les Paul) much more handy in a playing situation (if you're mainly a strat/tele guy) and has nothing to do with tone.

MOD2: A really great 'mod' (on Korean Fender Squire, RF Klon) was changing the bridge for an Allparts ABM-1 ($50). Not so relevant for your Gibson guitar, but its amazing what it can do to a cheaper guitar.

So, I went ahead and did the modification in the diagram above. That is I soldered a 500p cap and 220k resistor together and then soldered that to the bridge and neck volume pots. I actually did it through the f-hole but it was a little harder than I had imagined. I just held them on to the lugs with a drop of solder, so they could come off easy if needed.

It turns out the change is a little subtle but nice. I think just about anyone would like the mod.
