I've got a set of WR Coil Crossroads which is his lowest stock impedance pup set. Definately a little milder than the ones mentioned above. Until I gave the guitar to my nephew, I also used and liked a Rio Grande BBQ Bucker in the bridge of a semi-PRS shaped guitar.

FWIW, I put the bridge humbucker 1/8" further towards the neck (relative to the bridge) on my personal guitars. In an experimental design I've drafted but never built a guitar with a single bucker that was mounted in a track with enough resistance to hold its position until manually moved. The theory was that with about the same effort as hitting the switch, you could put the pup wherever you wanted along the string parabola -- possibly with detents at known cool positions. Never got it worked out on paper though.

interesting.

As far as the tone pot thing. I put in a gibson pot 500k audio taper and it fixed it but I broke one of the halves of the shaft off putting the knob on.

I then tried several other old pots I had and all of them had the same problem so i reluctantly put the original back in.

I wonder what is so special about that damn gibson pot?

sidehatch,
You said you changed the guitar from 2 Vol/1 Tone to 1 Vol/2 Tone. So I'm guessing that it's the pot that was previously a Volume pot that you changed to a Tone pot that's giving you the strange behavior.

Compare the two types of pots with your multi-meter. What's the total resistance (two outer lugs)? What is the resistance when the pot is halfway up? It may be the the Tone pot is linear taper.

BTW, I didn't want to believe it but when I tried it I was a believer. Those RS Guiterworks kits really can open up the tone of a guitar (depending on what's in it to begin with I suppose). I dunno what they do but even though they are a bit expensive...they're worth to me and it only hurts once.

EDIT: Regarding humbuckers; I generally like something in the PAF range when it comes to output...a little hotter in the bridge. There are so many choices and many of them are going to sound pretty similar...there's a LOT of PAF-clones out there. IMO, the wind is just the beginning, it's not that difficult to do, and lots of guys can do the wind. It's the materials and the magnet that IMO seperate the real good ones from the so-so ones (keep in mind I say all this having never wound a pickup...just tried a boatload of them and done my own magnet swaps). You might be surprised how much difference just the magnet makes. My current favorite set is just plain jane Burstbucker Pros that came in my '03 LP Standard...but with different magnets (fine corinthian Alnico imported from Italy ). The magnets that came in the BB Pros were sand cast A5 that were extremely strong and made for a very boomy low end and strident/glassy top end (not bad for clean)...I actually thought those magnets would be good for a JB type pickup since they are kind of middy/nasally to begin with. I'm rambling now...must stop. :D

Dan Armstrong made a guitar with a sliding track as you describe. There were even fewer of those than the plexiglas guitar with the interchangable pickups. Of those, I owned D1492A for a while and knew another player with one who had 5 of the interchangeable pickups. Cool guitar but it was too heavy to wear for very long and a had a weak neck joint - kinda like a cross between a Les Paul and an SG. ;)

Here's a website dedicated to Dan Armstrong - and a page showing the sliding pickup implementation.

I'll measure the pot like you mentioned. I bet you are right -that its becasue it was a vol pot. I dismissed it at first because the writing on the pot was the same on all pots and because I tried out several old pots with the same conclusion . I went to GC today and bought a gibson audio taper 500k pot audio taper and all is well. Both pickups now have different caps on them and I can hear a difference at every number.

I settled on a mallory .001 on the volume, a panasonic .033 on the neck tone and a panasonic .015 on the bridge so I can turn it off and still get that so called woman tone. My buddy robert keeley gave me a bunch of caps to experiment with and he said he likes those red panasonic caps in his fx and all of his guitars for tone caps.

I have orange drop caps in my strat but tomorrow Im going to try the red panasonics in the strat and see if it makes a difference. BTW: I got a set of his strat pickups yesterday and I haven't ever heard a strat that sounds that good! I was at his shop a while back and I happened to have my strat with me with fralin blues specials. I picked up a cheapy mexican strat he had with his new pickups and I couldn't believe how much better his sounded! I then treid a mexican strat with fralin vintage hots and it sounded better than mine but still not as good as his. Well, he finally got around to having his brother wind me a set up yesterday. Thats the beauty of having him live a few miles away and me knowing him forever,he just gives me stuff all the time!

Sorry to hijack to strat pickups-just had to let it out!

Glad to hear it turned out well.

I have no idea if this is snake oil but the RS kits (I think it's something 'special' about their tone caps) are supposedly designed such that they are less of a load when the pot is on '10'...so the guitar sounds more open/sparkley when the pot is on '10'. It kinda sounds like that's the case because using the same value pots/caps my guitars are more open/more sparkley with the RS kits.

Last year I traded a reverb unit I'd built for an Epi Sheriton II with Jason Loller PU's and an RS kit. The owner claimed it played great but sounded terrible.

When I opened it up I found the worst soldering I've seen in my life. Wires with and inch stripped off, placed in the center of the eyelet and held in place with solder, no metal on metal contact. One PU was even installed backwards, moving the pole pieces out of the harmonic node. He was right, it sounded like shit.

I rewired correctly and you'll have to rip this out of my cold dead hands. The RS kit and Lollers are both amazing. This is the only combination that all the band members mentioned as a great improvement. There's a complexity in the mids than no other combination has given me.

For the price I can't beat the schaller golden 50's from stew-mac. The overwound ones with a tube screamer or octavia have the best tone I have heard.

Also check out High Order. Great pickups and you can almost ask Jeff to custom build you anything you want. Nice guy to work with and the price is very reasonable.

Their upgrade kits include pots, switches etc. It's decent quality stuff. I would've bought the parts myself but the guy I got the guitar from bought the kit. He's proof that soldering is critical to tone  I told him to throw away his iron and send any soldering work to someone who knows how
