I have both the 12L and 12S. The 12L is spikier to my ear. Go look at the graphs again. The 12L has much more high end content. The 12S is not spiky. It is smooth.... The 12S falls off pretty sharply at 3.5K where as the 12L stays flat at 96db all the way up through 5K.

Best way to put it is that the 12S is creamier and the 12L is more clinical and sterile. At least for me....

Well I never said this was supposed to be a Hi-Fi speaker. One thing that curves ARE good for is discerning how a speaker responds with regard to itself. What's happening around 3K on the "S" most likely will be audibly perceived as a spike. Such problem does not exist on the "L".

EVs are known for their flat, sterile (as somebody put it) response. Celestions are known for their characterized response...anything BUT flat. Two different approaches to loudspeaker design...two different camps, and at opposite ends of the loudspeaker spectrum. The "S" looks (for whatever it's worth) more like a traditional Celestion, based on the graphs, than the usual EV...almost as if they're trying to capture some of the Celestion market. But aside from the spike in the graph, "spikieness" is a subjective term. FWIW, I've never heard of a 12L referred to as "spikey" before...flat or "sterile", all the time. If somebody thinks a 12L sounds "spikey", I'd bet (if I were a betting man) the "spike" is in the amp or the guitar.

Well, the spike is not really a spike. I was comparing the 12L to 12S. The 12S is creamier...... More Celestion like too, IMHO. But not that Celestion like....

Are 12s available these days? I see the 12L on the EV web site, but can't find a 12s. There are 12s re-cone kits... I guess you could take a 12L and re-cone it with a 12s kit???

OK, I know something about this last question...

About two years ago? three?, before the reissue was out, I called EV about a recone kit for a 12S. The service tech researched things and said that the cone/paper is available for the 12S, but that the only voice coil available was the 12L. In fact, he concluded, EV had discontinued the exact 12S voice coil as a recone part and that the only part available was the 12L voice coil - which EV combined for my recone needs.

The tech also told me that the difference between the two speakers was the top end - the 12L had more high frequencies. I figured this was a good thing as everyone seemed to prefer the 12L. How did it sound? Hm. Good, and yes, it did sound better to my ear than another 12S that I owned, more like a 12L. Plainly you could hear the difference between the two in the top end. Shortly thereafter I ordered another 12L/12S recone kit and had the other 12S reconed.

Of the 4 EVs I had at the time, 2 12Ls (stock) and 2 12Ss (reconed with 12L coils), I have only one 12S left and I have it in a 1/12 closed back cab. FWIW, the EVs I consider to be 'honest' speakers. I find with my playing style I prefer slightly 'dishonest' speakers - which would be Celestion, Weber, vintage Jensens, etc.. However, I do dig Zack's sound, he makes good use of the EVs and the EMGs, and good for him.

I've got both, and while I don't agree that the 12L is spikey, I do think the 12S is creamier. 12L in a closed back cab and a Deluxe Reverb is tone heaven IMHO....
12S works great with amps that are alittle on the sharp sounding side.
