Many of my customers do the same.... maybe you have your output level too high and your overloading the first stage, which you certainly don't want to do.
?
pedals are usually used to overload the first stage, this is their primary function
There is a very distinct difference between harmonic drive/overdrive and being completely overdriven/squashed destroyed. This, to me is pretty clear when you have some amps, that at max volume, do NOT sound good, because they are being driven too hard and the 'optimal' setting is somewhere a little below max volume. If you push an input stage to where the input wave form is so hot that it's squashed the waveform massively, then yes you are 'overdriving' or 'overloading' the input stage.

No?

I've had a difficult time dialing in some pedals in front of my 124 clone. The amp has so much of its own sparkly character that certain pedals require me to really fiddle around with eq to tame some of the high end. Generally I'm content with a Fuchs verbrator in the loop and maybe a boost out front. I haven't had much success getting any other pedals sounding/feeling "right". My 183 seemed to take pedals a little better, but I think it's because the amp was darker in general, so it was easier to find tones that weren't too harsh.
