What we need are some politician comparisons between 102 124 and 183. How about it tag?

I for one am very thankful for TAG and Shad's contribution of #183
I don't see anything negative that TAG has ever said about his amps or former amps
I wish some of the Amp Garage members had the same positive outlook on life
Last night I played my version of #183 at band practice with my new Dunblator clone.
All I can say is thank you it kicks ass what a fun amp to play with any guitar.
In my humble opinion #183 is way more fun to play than the 100w SSS or 150w SSS.
My #183 build custom wound power transformer, C1999 3H choke, C1998 OPT year 1968
NOS tubes Quad KT77 GEC, Siemens ECC83 year 1962 and close to exact parts as the real #183.
And a few modifications. Sings like a bird and stings like a hornet.

+1 on applause for tag and Shad. I love the 183 builds I've done. My next amp is a two channel with 183 on one side and a classic on the other.

... But..didn't your 183 clone have some NOS stuff in it (resistors Pot's Caps..etc) Shad had to use to nail the 183 tone?...
I don't doubt your TKT 183 sounds VERY VERY GOOD!!..

Hey Tony,
You know I was joking when i said i did not remember. :) Shad used all NOS parts on my first one because thats what i wanted. My 6L6 has few or no NOS parts, and from what I could tell under the very short time I had to play this new one, my 6L6, EL34 and the original 183 sound closer to each other than this one did. This is part of why I want to get them together again and really take the time to dial them in, and see how similar they really are. What I think you are saying (and i full agree) that no two amps can ever sound and feel DEAD on. Neither can two guitars (probably even more variation) or any two things in this world. Dumble himself cant do it, and thats all I have ever asked or wanted. Before the Quinn, the clones I had owned and played were always far enough off to make me crave the real deal. (The possible exception of a few rare TwoRocks) Again, just like two cars, or even gold clubs or baseball bats, each is slightly different. Such is this world we live in.

Have a great easter by the way! :)

Pretty much a typical TAG "very good very good" post. Yet ANOTHER thread expounding the virtues of #183 and praising the building skills of Shad. Tag doesn't build anything he just promotes amps and his agenda.[/quote]

Hey Eric!

Yes, I am again raving about what IMO is one of the better sounding of Dumbles many great amps, and I am happy that Quinn is delivering great sounding amps again, after a "rumor" was put out that he was going out of business. :D I am a VERY evil man!!

Tag are you having trouble using the "quote" function?

The forum has been a bit off last week or so.

My best sounding replica ODS amps have NOS and seasoned Iron (as well as many others who build and post here).. Whatever we use to build these amps, they still always manage to sound wonderful in their own way, inspire us to play and make our music...Enjoy the amps!

Happy Easter Back!

Thanks Tony! :) When I play my 6L6 (all new parts) next to my EL34 (all NOS) the differences are so slight, its confusing as to NOS making any difference at all. Brads TKT has aprox 1/2 the NOS parts my first one does, and when they were new, the Dumble, mine and his were also about as close as any 3 amps can be. (Brad has his set up very differently now, and in a direction I do not care for) Its another reason i am looking forward to getting at this new one in for more comparisons. The other difference is this new one has push pull pots instead of switches. Personally, I like the switches more. Push pulls can be a bitch to grab and its hard to see if they are on or off.

Ah thats not true
I sent mine back and he added some NOS parts that he didn't have at the time he made it
I believe only a pot or so is the difference between the two
along with different Nos tubes and mines cooler looking 8)
I also came up with the name of the amp and the face plate w/o no number's
Putting my spin on the Amp ,Where 183 has Dot's
Very Cool Very Cool
Carry On

Hey Brad,
Not that it matters because they sound so similar, (or did before you made all the changes) but I am pretty sure that all the pots are different, as well as other components as well. The pots are why the controls have to be set so differently on both amps to get them to sound the same. I am still missing one of them (El cheapo fender color coded) in mine. Next time I come over we can yank the chassis if you like and I can show you.

Well, I was able to borrow the new Quinn 183 today and put in some real time A/bing it with mine. As I said before, the differences are this one has no NOS parts (AFAIK. Shad can override me at any time about this), and has push pull pots instead of switches, as well as being 4 years newer than mine. The big difference first off is the sweep of the pots. I had thought originally that mine had a lot more gain, but they are around equal when you max all gains. The new one seems to bring the gain on very slowly from zero up until around 2 o'clock, at which point it becomes way more sensitive, and LOTS of gain is added from that point until max. With my amp in the traditional "Robben Ford" positions, where I think it sounds best, the new one has to have gain one at 2-3 O'clock, (Mine is at 10 o'clock) and lead gain about 2-3 Oclock where mine is also around 10 Oclock. Oddly, the lead volume (level) seems to be about the same as mine, while the MV, like the gains, has to be set much higher. The amp is brighter than mine, and thus the presence and treble have to be set about a click lower, and the bass and mids about a click higher. At that point, both amps are set with aprox the same gain, EQ, and volume levels. When playing both amps back and forth, Mine seems to sing a bit more, is a little more organic in the upper end, and feel a little better. However, the new ones clarity punches you right in the face, and no matter how you dial mine in, it seems a bit fuzzy and less articulate. I think that guys who play more in a rock style would dig the NOS parts more, and guys who are a bit more on the jazzier/fusion side would dig the New parts more. When playing solo, I thought I liked mine a bit more, but when playing with a backing and improvising, I was more inspired by the clarity and dynamics of the new one, and played better for sure. Not sure if its just this one, or if all of Shads "new" amps have this clarity, but its really amazing. I also wonder if the Dumble had this clarity when it was new. I can only imagine it did. I recorded both my takes with the new one, and they are posted below. I can upload the takes i did with mine if anyone wants to hear them for direct comparison, but they just sound a bit more muted and dull. :( I am using a PRS 10th anniversary Artist semi hollow trem, with an ebony board. Its stock except the McCarty pups were replaced with PRS 57/08s. (Really nice vintage sounding pups!) So to the clips we go. Guitar straight in, the verb is a TREX ROOMATE in the "loop" (No Dumbleator), the mic is an SM57, and the recorder is my Boss BR900. I think the clarity of the amp shows in the clips, especially considering my usual awful quality sound clips. Exceptional clarity and dynamics. The Dynamics are not as good as my Vox AC 15 HW, but as good or better than any Dumble i have played, including 183. very impressive. Oh yea, MESA 4/12 cab with 15 year old heritage G12H30 anniversaries. Sorry, no Politician, just some blues.
