I don't think you can go wrong with either the 12-65 or EV 12L.

But certainly there are other speakers that would also work well.

The problem is, unless you have a generous friend that will loan you a speaker or two to try out, you have to buy them which gets expensive fast.

When I built my D'lite 44 I bought and tried:

WGS V30 ans CL80 in a 2x 12, Eminence Tonkerlites, Sheffields, and finally the pair of EV 12L Classics.

Never did try any 12-65's.

i think I am leaning towards the G12-65 in a TL806 home built cab.
Funny how the Celestions are so much more expensive even here in the UK than the American speakers ! - you US guys provide some great value ! - i think next speaker will be a WGS or Eminence to go with the G1265, when I have more transport space again....My PA takes up so much room !

I just found a few sound samples on the net and think the G1265 and TL806 sounds like a great combination.

As the TL806 was designed around the EV's should I make any changes to the TL806 plans or just run with them as they are ?
cheers all

I used to have a homemade TL806 cab with a OEM EV-12L in it, of course I sold it a few years ago before my current Dumble build was started. :( Anyway, back when I was using it I missed the Celestion mids and highs, so I contacted Celestion and tried to get the Thiele/Small parameters for their drivers. It appears that Celestion does not give out these parameters for their guitar speakers, and did not recommend using them in a TL806 type cab.

So I decided to try out the TL806 with several Celestions anyway, it sounded very good with all of them, especially a G12H-100. So I'd say throw a TL806 together and just try it with the various speakers, you might be pleasantly surprised. I suppose you could also do it the hard way and measure the TS parameters for the Celestion you plan to use, then design a cab to that data.

The people who are using celestions in their TL806s, how are the drivers mounted? I'm building a cab at the mo, and there's clearly not enough room for rear-loading the driver without cutting chunks out of the cleats that hold the baffle on. Is it possible to front-load celestions without distorting the frame, and if so, what should be used between the frame and the baffle?

Got my Swamp Thang front loaded into a TL806 with no problems?
Sounds great too!

Bump for this. I'm interested in using other drivers in a TL806 format, probably rear loading. Dr. Z's Z-best cab is essentially a TL806 double wide with rear loaded speakers (70th G12H30 + Vin30).

You could try this for front mounting a speaker.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I think HAD originally used an Altec 417 in his 1x12s, at the very beginning, with the 50W amps, 4 ohm Bassman OT into the 8 ohm Altec, since Altec only made 4 ohm 417s on special order.

It is also said that this arrangement is the "original" HAD mod.

I recently had occasion to try this in an open backed Avatar 1x12 with a 2nd gen 50W ODS build, for the first time. It sounded pretty good and the individual with me who played it fell in love with the tone, and the next day came back with a substantial down payment to build him one, hence my curiosity.

Is it likely HAD tuned those amps so they were "designed" to be mismatched in this way, or was it simply that he couldn't get 4 ohm 417s? (OTOH maybe it was the RCA black plate 6L6GCs?).

I'm not the fellow with the downpayment, but I played the rig Mr. Root is talking about and it sounds amazing, wish we could a/b the same cab and speaker with the "right" impedance to see how much difference it makes!

Hi David, I am curious about this configuration. 4 ohm Bassman OT will have a primary of 4.2k so with the 8ohm speaker the primary will become 8.4k. Is this acceptable impedance for a couple 6L6s (50watt)?
