Strat/Dumble. Always a problem for me until today!

Interesting, I use Strats and Teles as well.
I am confused though, when you say Quinn, that must mean that you didn't build this amp, is that correct?
I can't really understand why this posted on a builder's forum, where we all share ideas and builds.
I've got 2 in the pipeline myself, a #102 style 50w and a JCM800 2204, both on the go. Been otherwise engaged getting 2 partscasters finished and ready to play out.
Have you got any builds going at the moment?

Sorry about the confusion. Yea. Shad cloned my Dumble and actually nailed the tone. Not an easy thing to do it seems.I am confused though, when you say Quinn, that must mean that you didn't build this amp, is that correct?

Quite a few guys post on here who are not builders, but have experience with real Dumbles. Its the "Dumble discussion" section.

Very cool! Look forward to hearing some sound clips to see how they turn out!

No time. I use it to practice playing, although I have thought about it. If I did build one, I am sure I would knock it out of the park!![]()

Re: Strat/Dumble. Always a problem for me until today!
Fair enough! Discuss away! I just wondered what you were about and how you fitted in here. A bit like Max, lots of knowledge of real Dumbles.
I would have thought, though, that the Gear Page was a better place to chat about amps you have bought, but it's a free world, so welcome.
What happened to your real Dumble(s)?
Any pics/gut shots?

robg - you are far behind on this one. tag101 has quite a history here and the gear page. He used to be known here as Mr Dumble. Your gear page reference is kind of funny whether you know it or not. Here is a link you may like:

tag - -that strat sounds good, but not a good as something humbucker equipped. Do you know what Shad did to accomodate Strats better? My strats are pretty good into the FET input of my 102/183 clone, but still not nearly as satisfying as my Les Paul, for instance.

Sorry Mr1010101 I don't think you will last too long around here then, I think TGP is a lot more tolerant of bovine ordure
Anyway where's the Quinn guts shots/ tech details?
Otherwise I'm outta this thread, gotta polish up my "Politician" chops.

I've tried lots and lots of mods on my #102 and #183 clones - also a slope resistor switch lowering the resistance to 68k, but so far the best mod on these two particular amps is upping the cathode cap on V1a from 5uf to 22uf.
IME The FET input makes the tone kind of artificial.

Did you put that on a switch to toggle between the two bypass caps?

Re: Strat/Dumble. Always a problem for me until today!
For me, the "Strat" sound is more about having everything clear enough to make the neck PU chirp a bit while still letting the middle PU growl and the bridge slice without being painful. I run the amp clean enough with the Strat that it's pretty much squeaky clean when you hit the strings lightly and moderately overdriven when you hit them hard. It's kind of a sound you'd associate more with a cranked Blackface Fender, but with my #102 clone it has this refined clarity and fatness that you wouldn't get out of a conventional amp.
I think the Dumble sound for many people is more of a saturated bridge humbucker grunting, squawky, smooth overdrive. IMHO, Strats don't generally like to do that without lots of help. I get that kind of sound out of my Strat, but to do it I use a passive tone boost that lowers the resonant peak of the guitar, boosting lows and mids and attenuating highs (basically making it respond like a humbucker). Flipping on the mid switch on the amp helps too (as you hear in Tag's video), but the highs are still skinny and slicing instead of smooth and round and IMHO you loose some of the cool, hollow Stratty low end character on the neck and middle PU positions that way.
That said, Tag's video has a really cool, somewhat ripped up but fat low mid thing going on that my #102 clone doesn't really do. Mine's tight, smooth and punchy down there. I wonder if that's just the difference between the #183 and #102 voicings, or some extra secret build-specific mojo. Ditching the LNFB loosens things up down there on my #102, but it's still not quite the same character.

I have the slope resistor switch implemented, but it is not really 'it' for me.Tip

I will give the cathode cap a try. What does that mod sound like with HBs? Thanks for the tip.
I like the FET for some particular sounds, but not for everything. For instance, I lose my nice cleans. OD is really the problem for me with the Strat. It is useable, but not magic like with the HBs.
Re: Strat/Dumble. Always a problem for me until today!
Thanks, I will bear that in mind when in the tweaking stage. Really useful advice.bluesfendermanblues wrote:Tipvibratoking wrote:robg - you are far behind on this one. tag101 has quite a history here and the gear page. He used to be known here as Mr Dumble. I hope the FET sounds better than you predict after making the board with the NTE and all.
Re: Strat/Dumble. Always a problem for me until today!
I agree that the FET input sounds less natural. There are lots of high impedance buffer / boost pedals you can build or buy that will make the amp react in a similar way. I'm wondering if part of what people are liking about it is actually the phase reversal.

Seriously I think you did a great job on that cartoon on YouTube.
Self parody is a great trait to possess. So many people out there can't laugh at themselves or their silly obsessions.
Re: Strat/Dumble. Always a problem for me until today!
No pics or gut shots from me, but a good friend of mine who I sold the amp to put a few out there. It does not show everything, but Shad who cloned it for me put up a large post about the amp here I believe. Search the archive or stickie threads on #183. Have fun trying to get it to sound the same though. Other 183 clones I have heard and played were not even in the ballpark for some reason. I guess there is more to getting it sonically correct than a schematic and or internet pics.rogb wrote:Fair enough! Discuss away! I just wondered what you were about and how you fitted in here. Shad didnt do anything. I think its just the guitar. My other Strats sounded like $hit through the amp to me, so I sold them all. (A Detemple and other Fenders) My Tele sounds so killer through the amp, I just ordered a set of Don Mare Strat Super Sports which has the same output as the ones in my Tele. That may make it sound even better. A hot Strat bridge pup really does make a difference. I have an old Mexican Strat that has really hot pups in it. No chime or quack, but man, the bridge KILLS into 183s overdriven channel. Not mid boost or PAB needed. I bet EMGs with that mid boost like Carlton used to have would sound great, although you lose a lot of that natural Start sound. The Mares may be just right with the fairly hot Bridge(7.3K I believe) and milder mid and neck pups. Anything above that, and I think you are going to lose to much of that top end that makes a strat a strat. At that point, you may as well use a different guitar I think.
VERY GOOD VERY GOOD!
