Re: Bourns Pots
The bourns at AES are pretty crappy. I bought a few to try, 10% taper and felt like sand was inside. I much prefer my Alpha 30% taper pots.
Given that, AES is selling a "generic" sealed pot (limited values) that is the nutz for guitars. 20% taper and smooth, marketed by mighty might. I turned ol' dogears onto these and I think he likes them as well.

Re: Bourns Pots
. IMHO I believe it has more to do with carbon trace element and taper which can effect loading..Key spots are Volume controls like Vol/Master/Drive/level or ratio./ 2nd most important treble and Mid controls.. The ones I like are in order CTS or Allen Bradley's..hot-molded carbon types from PEC.. Conductive plastic Clarostat units,(Feel like crap) sound OK.. Alphas feel great.. sounds OK..
Also FWIW.. I've used Alphas in Bass pot Presence and even mid controls with good results just like Dumble..
Claimer.. Just my opinion yours may very..
Hope this helps!!

Re: Bourns Pots
For new production pots PEC to me are the top of the line. Used in my last 8 builds with no problems
Photo, A/B & alpha look at the wiper. I tried the burns pots they reside in a land fill the tabs break off to easy.
Steve.

Gary what are those AES pots called, I don't see them on their site.glasman wrote:The bourns at AES are pretty crappy. I bought a few to try, 10% taper and felt like sand was inside. I much prefer my Alpha 30% taper pots.

Re: Bourns Pots
That's weird, they're easy to find on the CEDist site, under "Potentiometers" as "Generic Sealed Potentiometers", but not so obvious on tubesandmore.com.Structo wrote:[qu

Search on this part number and then click "catalog page":

I *assume* these are what Gary is referring to.

You are correct and I did buy them on the commercial site.
Really bugs me and you have to be careful with CE sometimes parts are cheaper on the AES site for the same thing as on CE.

The Mighty Mite pots look a lot like Tocos RV24YS pots...Given that, AES is selling a "generic" sealed pot (limited values) that is the nutz for guitars. 20% taper and smooth, marketed by mighty might. I turned ol' dogears onto these and I think he likes them as well.

They are listed in the geetar section. That's weird, they're easy to find on the CEDist site, under "Potentiometers" as "Generic Sealed Potentiometers", but not so obvious on tubesandmore.com.

A couple months back they had all Hammond transformers reduced, and with the free shipping over $100 on the AES side, it worked out to be a good savings over the commercial side price.Structo wrote: Really bugs me and you have to be careful with CE sometimes parts are cheaper on the AES site for the same thing as on CE.
Re: Bourns Pots
If you look at the list of catalog pages the sealed pots are on page 55.
Crap, I just noticed these are all knurled shafts.

Re: Bourns Pots
I recently bought the generic sealed knurled pots for use in my LP.
I first tried Bourns, then CTS and now the generic sealed potentiometers, much better potentiometer for sure. I want to experiment with different old caps I have.

Re: Bourns Pots
What's your source for 30% pots? All my alphas seem to be 15%.glasman wrote:I much prefer my Alpha 30% taper pots.
