Winterland

Post by 6G6 »

OK, so who knows what about these?
If I had to guess, I'd say they must be a lot like a Sunn 2000S.
Yes? No? Close?
I did turn up some pics on the internet that show #003.
They reveil Dynaco trannys and four KT 88s.

So, I gather no one has much to add, so far.
If I ever find the pics, I'll try to post a link.

Sometimes it takes a while for the right person to answer a question here as we usually don't try to guess an answer without the facts to back it up.

It's possible that no one here is familiar with the amp enough to say what it was and is.

If there was more info on the Winterland that was already known you'd hear it.

They are rare amps, not many around at all. I wouldn't hold your breath on this thread...

its a cool amp but from a bass playing point of view the winterland isn't a holy grail like it's Overdrive brothers. The ampeg SVT has the tube bass amp market pretty well cornered... being that the winterland is very strongly designed if not cloned from an Ampeg V9 preamp and SVT output... Personal its not a build that warrents the effort as both amps can still be found on the used market for a fair price. If you wanted to hear a winterland... route the preamp out of the V9 into the power section of the SVT biased w/ KT88.

cool post though it's always fun to see what knowledge surfaces!

Indeed:

very similar boring clean sustaining guitar sounds from silky to glassy as with these crappy Dumblelands and Steel String Singers. If you've ever listened to SRV playing one of these Winterlands in the late eigthies, you will have noticed this too. Forget about this crappy stuff!

Cheers

Pretty sure he meant the 300SL. Wasn't that the Tommy Shannon amp?

Oh, the Winterland is not the SVT.

Hi Jelle!

Yes, Tommy Shannon played a Dumbleland 300SL for a period of time in the second half of the eighties.

But most of the known specimens have been made for guitar as far as I remember (FET, PB, Reverb). You could think of these as being some kind of a 300W SSS.

Chris Cross (great guitar player!) may be one of the most famous users of a Dumbleland 300SL (with two stacked 2x12" cabinets. One of these cabinets I've seen somewhere at the bay earlier this year).

The early 200W (4xKT88) Winterland has been the forerunner of the Dumbleland for guitar and bass and the Dumbleland for guitar has been the forerunner of the SSS.

Just have a look at some of the 70ies Dumble catalogues and you'll find these models and the possible options.

As far as I know and remember now the only similarity between an Ampeg V9 and a Dumbleland 300SL is the use of the same kind of transformers. Otherwise rather different as far as I remember now.
As far as I remeber a Dumbleland 300SL has more in common with a Dumbleland 150W and a SSS as with an Ampeg V9.

And IMHO the pictured Winterland 200W has indeed not much in common (besides being a high power tube amp) with an Ampeg V9 (btw: the V9 is a guitar amp) too.

Have a great time,

Max

I love the sound that Tommy got from that thing...I would love to hear Stanley Clarke play his alembic through one too :)
