Choke specs?

Post by Tdale »

Is the specs for the choke very important? How many mA should it be? How many Henry?

Would this work?

That's exactly what you want. I understand that's the one Dumble used.

another question

Post by Pete »

OK, I have a question about chokes
The one in the link is rated 1.5k, I think mine both measure less than 100 ohms (I have 2 amps, one of the chokes is salvaged out of an old Twin the other is new Fender replacement I think)
Do I have the wrong one? Could these be damaged? Would this effect the amp performance? ... (I don't know much about these things)
Well, that's 3 questions .. anyone?
Thanks
Pete

I believe that the 1.5K is impedance, not resistance. In that case your measurement is unimportant. I measured one of my chokes at 80ohms so I'd bet you're fine.

Yes, 80 something to 90 is about what I have
Thanks (that actually helped me a lot)

This is a wonderment to me too. Impedance is an AC measurement, when you add in the inductance the whole picture becomes a vector chart where current leads voltage in a capacitive circuit and voltage leads current in an inductive circuit. These chokes, the way we use them anyway, see no AC at all. They see ripple. I really don't know if the 1.5 figure refers to the impedance to the ripple or what? There ain't no way that these chokes measure 1.5K DC resistance.

I got a big old Stancor that says right on the box, 9H 250MA and 120 ohms. No mention of impedence at all.
