d-lite vs d-umble
hi, first of all my congratulation for this forum.. It's my first post and i'm from portugal.. So sorry about my english
My doubt is about the d-lite convertible that seen in the forum.. I've built many stuff like stomps, a televax (mix between a telecaster and a variax), 1 dual madamp (dual modded madamp a15mk1 with 6 channels e stereo output).. Now i'm building another madamp.. But then i've heard the dumbles! That the amp that i want! So my question is: why the d-lite? The dumble 50watts is too loud? It doesn't have that sweet sound at low volume? The d-lite have enough clean to play in a full band? Another questions is that I'm gonna need about 6 preamp tubes, so what the pt that i have to get?

Welcome to the forum!
I am also new to the D-builds, so I am eager to see the responses like you are.

Re: d-lite vs d-umble
I'm probably not the best one to answer this but I'll give you my opinion.
I've only built one amp and it was a D'Lite 22/33 from a kit. You can see my build link here. https://tubeamparchive.com/viewtopic.php?t=4419
The D'Lite is only designed to be a distant relative ... pre-amp in the same place and all ... but was originally designed with 6V6 which is real nice. But you can get versions in 22w, 33w, 44w and 88w in 6L6 and 6V6 multiples.
I was able to gig with my amp as long as I had 6L6 and and EVM12L ... but the 6V6 are nice too. I love the amp but it's cousin once or twice removed ... it's doing it's own thing.
PS: It has a real nice master volume, PAB/OD relays that make it effective at any volume. I imagine you can run the 88w watt version down real low and still sound good.

Welcome to the forum.
50 watts is not too loud! The masters on these amps work great.
I love the D'Lites that I have built for myself and a friend. I like them more with bigger OT, PT, and 6L6 tubes. Plus a few tweaks at the presence and dropping string. For me, 2 x 6V6 was not enough oomph to have a robust clean tone over a drummer. And 6L6 tubes just give it a bit more girth as well in the cleans and OD. If you are not playing regularly out live - that may not be an issue. The OD tone with 6V6 is an extremely cool sound! The D'Lite was really the first amp that I ever built and it went without any issues. A very pleasurable experience. These are just my opinions but, I'd push you to do a 6L6 amp that has Bassman power and a beefy output transformer.
Keep us posted.

Re: d-lite vs d-umble
Another reason for the D'Lite is the price point.
If you are the type of guy that can build an amp from scratch and source all the parts necessary, that's fine.
But you will soon find that with the multiple shipping charges for the different items you need quickly add up.
When I bought my head kit Brown Note was having a sale so I was able to score the amp kit and head cab for around $800.
Where else are you going to find an amp that approximates that D tone for that price?
I intended to run my D'Lite with 6L6's from the get go.
This amp was designed around the 6V6 tube.
So there are a few inexpensive tweaks that bring it real close to the real deal.
Sure it doesn't have the Rock/Jazz switch but I don't think most guys mess with that switch very much anyway. They just decide which way they like the tone and leave it at that.
I also installed a beefier OT for bigger tone and tighter bass.

Re: d-lite vs d-umble
Structo, when you talk about the "few tweaks", are those the ones mentioned in the "tweaked" d-lite schematic that is running around?
I know it sounds obvious but wanted to make sure you were talking about the same thing.
Thanks
Frank

Re: d-lite vs d-umble
Yes I used that layout as a reference.
There were also a few subtle changes I made to suit the amp more to my liking but that layout contains most of the mods suggested here by the guys that know the D amps.

Re: d-lite vs d-umble
I'm studying the schematic of the amp.... but i've found one thing that i don't understand... (in blue in this screen shot)
[IMG:306:322]http://img269.imageshack.us/img269/6464/whatxcj.png[/img]
what is this? (maybe i've missed something.. some explanation)
other question is about the output tranformer.... the right OT in the schematic is a Fender Twin 4 Ohms OT (who has a primary impedance of 2000 Ohms)..
I want more than 4 Ohms (4 and
and only want 50w.... so can i use this one?
http://www.tube-town.net/ttstore/produc ... -Watt.html
It's a Marshal replacement.. rated 50w, primary impedance of 2000 Ohms and 2, 4, 8, 16 ohms of secondary...
or do i have to go to this one? rated 120w but the only with multiple secondary impedance and a primary of 1900 Ohms (nearest of the 2000 Ohms of the original)
http://www.tube-town.net/ttstore/produc ... 1650T.html
that's just this for now

Re: d-lite vs d-umble
Hi divolt,
The schematic symbol represents the coax, which is grounded at one end only. Study the photos in the files section to see which end is grounded in each instance of the 6 pieces of coax that are used.
Any Bassman iron would be appropriate for a 50 watter, however if you are going to all the effort of a d'clone build and want to experience the real magic, then you have to go for 100W. Twin iron is very popular. The price is very similar to Bassman iron so all you will need as an extra are two more 6L6's (34.40 EUR @ Tubetown!)
Then you won't have to look back and wonder what might have been
if you had gone for the 100W to start with.
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Paul.

Re: d-lite vs d-umble
anyone suggest me another OT with multi secundary impedance?
I've been thinking to build the 100w version and then pull off 2 tubes.. for what i've learned the secundary impedance duplicates (if the out of OT is 4 Ohms with 2 tubes off it pass to 8 Ohms.. i guess!)

"Mercury Magnetics, FTBO-MM '59 Tweed; 2, 4, 8 & 16Ω taps" in my amp. Its sounds fine, but a little on the expensive side at USD 200.00.

well.... but where in europe?? (because outside europe i have to pay 35% plus of taxes)bluesfendermanblues wrote:I have adivolt wrote:anyone suggest me another OT with multi secundary impedance?
