Skyliner Stack

Post by '67_Plexi »

Sorry I posted this accidentally in the files forum, should have been here:

I am a tube amp engineer of over 25 years, but I am relatively new to the Dumble amps (curiosity finally took the better of me).

I do however have a question for you guys that are familiar with the various designs.

What are typical values and layout of the 'Skyliner' circuit ?
What topology was it most common/always in, HRM/non-HRM ?
What pre-amp option switches are typical with this design ?

I know there's probably more than one answer because it seems very little with this man was fixed due to the 'one-off' nature he chooses to use, but any pointers would be helpful.

Thanks guys, Alan.

Skyliner = .1 Bass Cap, .01 Mid Cap, 333pf treble Cap (.001 and 500 in series or 390of and .0022uf in series). Controls Bass = 500KA, Mid = 250KA and Treble 250KB.
What topology was it most common/always in, HRM/non-HRM ?
It was used in both HRM and non-HRM amps. Remember that it is speculated that the HRM amps were designed to be run with the tone stack boost enabled whenever you engaged overdrive. The .01uf mid cap and a Telecaster are a match made in Heaven.

What pre-amp option switches are typical with this design ?
With an HRM type amp they were normally Bright, Mid and Jazz/Rock
Older non-HRM amps were Bright, Deep and jazz Rock.

I know there's probably more than one answer because it seems very little with this man was fixed due to the 'one-off' nature he chooses to use, but any pointers would be helpful.

I tried the bass boost on a non-HRM amp I built awhile ago. I never use it. It's simply too much, boomy and muddy.

Thank's Gary I know that's a truly better definition of HRM! the PAB (or something similar) is always turned on whenever the OD is engaged. I don't think it's a widely available mod on real Dumbles, only few of them should have it, anyway do you have an idea about the corresponding relay wiring?

I have BIG feet so I fit both buttons at the same time. :D

Actually you could wire the two relays in parallel with a switch to control whether or not both are activated when you press the OD footswitch. I have never tried it, but seems like it would be easy enough to do.

The real trick is keeping the OD from being enabled when you press the Boost button in Clean mode. I use the PAB in clean mode a LOT. Probably a blocking diode would do the trick. I have not sat down and figured it out on paper but the concept should work.
