Radio Shack Transfomers - may become Unobtainium

Post by glasman »

Just a heads up, if you use the RS small filament transformers you'd better stock up. Based on the Phoenix area, fewer and fewer RS stores are stocking this items. It appears that they may be phasing these parts out.

Out of 6 stores I checked, only one had any remaining stock.

My Radio Shaft hasn't stocked them, ever. I've been using a hammond that fits in the exact same location.

The hammonds work fine, but RS was ever so convenient :).

Mouser has equals, but yeah, stopping into the Shack for a part in the morning is often easiest....

The Radio Shack guys have an online catalog that's not viewable to the public, so if you find a cooperative RS employee, ask. He found me a cell phone battery on their internal parts site that cost half what they sold in the store--and it was shipped to my house.

Radio Shacks are ok if you need a cell phone or toy but they stopped stocking the good stuff years ago as amateur radio died off.

I went in once to buy some etchant solution. I asked the dude there at the counter since I couldn't find it on the shelf.
He said, we stopped selling it because of environmental reasons......
I had him call all the stores in my town and nobody had any.
I said, I see you still sell the copper clad boards but you are going to sell the etchant to make pcb's?

He just shrugged his shoulders.....

The one by my house is the WORST..If your not there to by speaker wires or battery's it's usually faster to find stuff yourself by the time you explain to the clerk what a DPDT switch is you could be otta there!!

I went looking for one of those at the local store the other day. None to be found, but the clerk ordered one up as a "direct to customer" sale, which means it will be shipped to my house, no charge.

Isn't it sort of "traditional" to have a Radio Shack relay supply tranny in your D-style amp? Part of the mojo?

I picked up a couple from my local one here for grins, finding stuff there is like finding change under your car seat -a neat bonus when you least expect it.

I went online to see if they even had MOVs and they did so I did the store search option and my store showed 2 in stock which they did. Since then I checked for shits and giggles and they had restocked them. The guys there didn't know what they were or where they would be if they had any I found them.

I was waiting for my MOV back order is why I went there. They do stock some hook up wire.

The guys in my local RS were just telling me they love customers who buy parts- it's the highest profit margin in the store. They make nothing on iPods and cell phones. If only they'd stock the stuff...

I happened to stop by my local RS yesterday. Their parts isle was basically cut in half. The guy there told me that a few months ago corporate HQ ordered them to send a bunch of their parts back to Texas and that they will no longer stock them. No more transformers or aluminum project boxes here among other things.

Hey Tony, I cleaned a little pedal effects pcb yesterday after soldering.
I used denatured alcohol and an old tooth brush. The flux came right off.
I use the Kester 60/40 .031 solder.
