EVM-12L Classic Reissue vs G-1265 or original EVM-12L
I build a D'Lite 22/33 about a year ago ... I put a G-1265 1x12 open back cab with it. I like it a lot.
I had an original EVM-12L with my '78 Boogie since about '83 but I gave that rig to my son. That speaker is in a sealed 1x12 cabinet. I liked the fact that it had a few more highs but they were smooth and the speaker had a tighter bass allowing you to turn up the bass a bit a live volumes without getting flabby.
I'm rehearsing with a new rock band and will begin playing live in early January. I'm finding that I'd like a bit less G1265 coloring of the sound by the speaker at the higher volumes. The bass can get loose at higher volumes I think. So I'm considering getting one of these reissues.
So ... my questions:
- Can anyone compare the EVM-12L Classic Reissue to the original EVM-12L? Sound specifically?
- Can anyone compare the Classic Reissue to the G-1265?

Well I'll let you guys know how it turns out. I got an EVM12L Classic on the way. I'll let you know how it compares with my G-1265 and my original EVM12L pictured below.

I have an original g12/65 & a reissue in the same cab...........the reissue is a bit brighter than the original.
Maybe with more hours on the reissue it will tame the highs.

OK ... I broke down and ordered one of these ... UPS delivered on Christmas Eve ...
[IMG:629:640]http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m168 ... lassic.jpg[/img]
I've still got to play it live with the band to see how it does. But it really sounds just like my '83 EVM12L that I've been using for 25 years. Maybe just a little tight ... will need to break in a little ... but very pleased.
Tight low end ... very balanced across the entire range ... louder than the G1265 with less bass (unless you choose to dial in a bit more) but loses the flabby bottom I was getting with the G1265 at higher volumes. Maybe a little brighter ... I think it will break in though nicely. As I recall it took a few weeks with some higher volumes to break in.

You've come to your own conclusions, but when I compared an original G1265 with an original EV12L on my D'Lite 22/33 I preferred the G1265. (FWIW, on the OTS, it was the other way around...I preferred the EV)

I like the G1265 about two clicks lower on the master volume but at live volumes I think the EVM12L is more of what I need. I might get another 1x12 cab in the future and have both available.

Practice today with the new band. Finally got a chance to play my D'Lite amp with the new EVM12L and the latest version of the pedal board (needed for some covers in the new band).
The amp was great ... the EVM12L is louder and even though not broken in ... sounds really good ... like coming home. The basic board setting is REVERB + Xotic RC. Adding TS9 or Xotic BB when I need a little extra oomph. Can back of the master volume of the amp without having to go to the amp with a little touch on the volume pedal in the loop. Just wonderful.
If I need a little more at a big stage or outside gig, I can add the 2x10 and run at 4 ohms instead of 8 ohms ... more power and 140% more square inches of speaker area.
Playing the G&L Legacy (Strat) and the Schecter Tele ... the single coils seem to cover the most ground. I might take the Yamaha Semi out too but it's developed a bit of a hum that I will have to fix first.
Whoo Hoo ... finally pay dirt!

Ken are these EVL's currently being made?
All I see is the Black Label Zack Wylde EV12L's at $280 a pop.
So how do these differ from the 1265?
My problem is, the only extension cab I have is a 2x12 so I need pairs to do it right......

Re: EVM-12L Classic Reissue vs G-1265 or original EVM-12L
I'd be tempted to pair the G1265 with the EVM12L in two identical cabs ... I may do that. I think it might be a killer combination. The EVM 1x12 along with my Emi 2x10 and a G1265 1x12 that can all be used in two cab combinations could be sweet.
What's different? I like the way the G1265 65w sounds until I get way up in the volume playing live. At that point, the bottom end gets a bit flabby. It is a bit more middy than the EVM (which is pretty even across the whole range which makes it pretty transparent). The EVM is a 200w speaker and even with my 100w Boogie you could throw whatever you want at it and it's not going to break up or get flabby. Having played one for 25 years ... the EVM is a speaker that just reproduces the amp sounds. So with both the Boogie and D'Lite having a lot of the sound come from the pre-amp ... it just makes sense ... at least for me.
The EVM is a bit brighter on the high end ... but I can always make an amp less bright with the tone controls. I can't make one brighter though. I think it will ease a bit when it breaks in. It's such a stout speaker that might take a little time with a 33w amp.
Having said that ... I really like the way the G1265 sounds up to about 2 clicks lower on the master volume. I just find that when the preamp, poweramp and speaker are all breaking up a bit ... just a tad too much.
They look like this now ... currently made ... American Musical Supply has them for $195 with free shipping in 8-ohm or 16-ohm. While the backs look different the front side of the speaker looks the same.

My old '83 model is still kicking in my son's amp after 25 years and looks like this ... they appear to be the same speaker but the old ones have a heat sink over the magnet. They stopped making them until recently.

Some of this might just be my comfort zone with a speaker that I've played for 25 years. But I can say that today was the first time since I joined this live band that my rig was just doing what I told it to. I had been pretty used to that feeling for the past few decades with my Boogie/EVM amp. Nice to have that feeling back.

Doveman, sweet clips on your soundclick!
Were those all recorded with the D'Lite and the G1265?

Thanks ... no ... it's a mix. A few are my old Boogie/EVM. Most are the D'Lite but some of them are with the 2x10 Emi cab ... some with the G1265. Also quite a variance in the tubes used. I started with 6V6, moved to 5881s (which I like best). Not recorded yet but I am currently using 6L6s to get the most volume/headroom out of the amp ... obviously with the EVM as well now. There's also a wide variety of guitars used and the descriptions of the gear used are in the song descriptions ... so you can tell which guitar, tubes, speakers, etc.dave g wrote:Doveman, sweet clips on your soundclick!

A few them are just something thrown together while a couple have much more thought put into them ... you can tell the difference.

Well I ordered a EVM12L Classic from American Music Supply.
We shall see. I'll have to pair it with one of the speakers I have on hand.

I hope you like it ... it is cheaper than the 300w Zack speaker and more appropriate for sure for that amp. I think that having both the EVM12L and the G1265 ... I know why they are recommended most of the time although they are really different speakers. I ordered my EVM on 12/22 on received it on 12/24 ... during Christmas rush ... I was freakin' amazed by that with regular free shipping.Structo wrote:Well I ordered a EVM12L Classic from American Music Supply.

Re: EVM-12L Classic Reissue vs G-1265 or original EVM-12L
After playing the rig twice now with the band, I'm really pleased. A really nice thing about this speaker is how much louder (more efficient) than the G1265. That's important to me with a 33w amp. This allows me much more flexibility in how I play the amp. I was struggling just to be loud enough without losing the tone. I think I'm going to find that I can go back to my regular playing mode ... no pedals ... using the guitars volume to clean up ... the way I've been playing for decades.
I was trying to get a little more oomph with pedals and stuff and I think I can ditch all that now. Sweet.
The flab in the bass is in fact gone ... while bright ... it is very much like my old EVM already. I think when it breaks in it will be the same speaker as the one I played for 25 years. All that muscle leaves it up to the amps preamp and poweramp ... which are pretty busy at live volumes ... which is pretty cool if it's enough. I think it will be.

Structo ... you got yours yet or is it still too soon?

Well even though I was going after a less flabby bottom when at higher volumes (G1265 to EVM12L), I seem to have also benefitted from the efficiency (sensitivity 97db to 100db).
Seems that for every 3db you get twice the volume for the same wattage. While I'm not sure about that exactly, I can say that I'd estimate a 50-60w amp would have been needed to get this new volume out of the G1265.
So a good thing to know if you're going to try to gig with a 22w/33w amp.
