Starter LC record and LC or RF DVDs?
Another thread got me thinking that I need a Larry Carlton music appreciation course.
What is a good 'starter' LC record? My roots are rock and I'm only familiar with his work with Steely Dan (and most of the time I'm not really sure who is playing guitar). Any good DVDs? I'd really like a good DVD (feel free to suggest a good RF DVD if there are any...I do have some RF studio stuff). I love instrumentals.

Thanks.
mlp - In another thread I think you said Last Nite was some of his best playing as well as some of his best tones and Tony also said that was his fave so I'll start there.
Do either have any DVDs? If not I wonder why? I have the first Crossroads DVD which has LC doing Josie.

Last Nite is amazing. Sleepwalk is great also.
More recently, I really like Sapphire Blue. The Japanese CD has an
extra bonus track with a different version of one of his classics. Terrific.
I have the new Rerecorded Hits on the mail. Should be interesting.

Check out renegade gentleman, it's one of my favorites!

I'll also go with Renegade Gentleman as a preference. LC has been quoted as having used a Steel String Singer like Eric Johnson's on a large part of that LP. I would specifically avoid Fire Wire. It has some nice ODS tones, but his playing on this one seems overly sedate to me.

LC / RF favorite recordings
My faves:
Larry Carlton / "Larry Carlton" (some of his best solos on this one)
Larry Carlton / "Strikes Twice" (Mulberry Street solo is amazing)
Larry Carlton / "Friends" - probably the best produced album with BB King and Michael Brecker as guest artists.
Robben Ford / "Inside Story" - (with The Yellowjackets)
- also the first "Yellowjackets" albumn has some great playing by Robben.
"Casino Lights" (multiple artists) - Monmouth College Fight Song - one of Robben's best solos ever.
If you have trouble finding these, try tower.com or audiophileimports.com

Am I recalling correctly that both Larry Carlton and Robben Ford played with Tom Scott's LA Express?
I enjoyed Larry Carlton's work on Joni Mitchell's "Miles of Aisles" tour - again with the LA Express as "backup."
+1 for Larry's work on "Larry Carlton" and "Strikes Twice."

That is Mr Ford on the "Miles Of Aisles" record. Pictures inside the album cover of Joni with the L.A. Express include Robben and (to me) when you hear it you know it is RF playing. I have all the LA Express recordings, I think the first one was LC, and RF after that. Joni's "Court & Spark" recording is all LC, good stuff. There is a 1996 Tom Scott and the L.A. Express CD with RF on guitar (Joe Sample, Steve Gadd etc.), they "revisit" many of the old tunes.Zippy wrote:Am I recalling correctly that both Larry Carlton and Robben Ford played with Tom Scott's LA Express?

Not to 'jack this thread (and you know that means I'm going to try...) What other examples of Dumble tones are out there?
Steely Dan is one of my favorites, as is Joni Mitchell's Miles of Aisles (a desert island disc for sure) and I'm aware of the David Lindley and Jackson Browne associations with D amps, also Lowell George, SRV, and of course more recently John Mayer. I'm a fan of jazz and fusion too, and the examples cited above are all great.
But, are there any other well-known or not-so-well-known examples? Maybe even some that are decidedly different from the above?
