Opinions on speaker paring

Post by AdrianJ »

I've heard that John Mayer is currently using Celestion G12-65 and Century G12 speakers in his live setup. From what I understand he's got a 2x12" cabinet for each speaker (ie 2xG12-65 and 2xCentury G12), however I was wondering what your opinions were of a single 2x12" cabinet with 1 of each speaker in would be.

In case it's relevant the power handling of the G12-65 is 65W and the Century G12 is 80W, I would get both at the same impedance.

Cheers guys...

That's really interesting. I love the sound from his current setup. Where did you hear that about the speaker selection?

I wonder how the G12 Century compares to the G12H30? That's what I have in my cab right now, along with a G12-65.

From the guy who made his current cabs....

http://www.alessandro-products.com/main.html

He said that John is using a mix of Celestion G12-65's, Golds and Century G12's. He said that John thinks the G12-65 works best alone and the other speakers add high freq detail in conjunction with the 65's.

Since John's currently using a 2 amp, 4 cab setup, I assume he's probably got 2 cabs loaded with the G12-65's and one of each other cab loaded with each of the other 2 types.

Since I'm aiming for a single 2x12" cab setup (eventually - man this saving is hard!!), I'll have to settle for one of each though the ideal situation would be to have 2 2x12" cabs and load one with 2 x G12-65's and the other with 1xGold and 1xG12....

Choices, choices, choices....

The good news is that I'm now sure I can get the tone I want from Celestions, and I'm in the UK so they're the easiest of the main brands to get hold of!!
