Best donor heads for a 100W

Post by greiswig »

Hi, all,

I think I've about taken my D'Lite as far as I can, tweak-wise. I like, but I'm ready for another project, to apply all that I've learned here (many thanks!) and in my own hours tweaking, playing, tweaking...

Anyway, I just missed a "needs repair" Fender Twin head on Ebay a couple of weeks ago...nuts. I'm wondering what other good candidates are out there that I should keep my eyes peeled for. The one atypical thing I'd like to try is to build a Dumbleator into the head, so I need at least four AX7 sockets. I'd also like to get good iron, and a chassis with sufficient knobage.

Any recommendations for sleeping beauty donor heads?

The Traynor YBA-1a Bassmaster makes a good Candidate as well.. Big Beefie Iron.. The voltages are a little high though 510v somewhere in there.. I suggest loading it with 6550's put you in the 80 watt range with that voltage and throw down a nice floor.. The Gold Lion KT-88's would also kill in there.. The several I did I used a Fixed Bias Cathode bias switch that worked great.. With the amp set at lower volumes the Cathode setting sounded bigger and warmer... A nice feature for a 2 output tube amp... Good Luck

Quad Reverb also. Found a head in a newly rebuilt cabinet for $350. Cabinet, chassis, iron, and pre wired heater sockets!! Not having to wire sockets is worth at least $50 in my book.
