advice needed

Post by electric »

well i've never head experience with a dumble amp
i've only heard clips/seen videos
but i'd love to build one.
this one goes out to dumble cloners...
which model to build? i want one that is versatile with a nice clean but also a really good ovrdrv

any thoughts???
can someone give me a guide of
how each model sounds?

Hi

even if your only even just thinking of doing this - DO IT - you wont regret it.
Suggest you build a 50W ODS using the files posted in the "files section"

There is no one right way - just use the schematics as a base and read as many of the posts here as possible for component tweaks and tips.

The Hybrid A is a good jumping off point - and you'll find lots of opinions on how to tweak for maximum/optimum sound.

If its good clean and great OD you want look no further than these circuits.

good luck

thanks
yes i can tell from the clips i've heard that these are great amps but my concern is the difference in biasing of preamp tubes between the 70s and 90s preamp.
I've heard that the 97 model is voiced close to marshall sound and doesn't have the nice clean of the 77 model...
is this true?

My version of the 97 has a THICKER clean w/PLENTY of chime, MORE so than the earlier circuits imho. To me itsa great tradeoff, as i have a sweet clean that cuts thru in LIVE situation, a GREAT Marshallish CRUNCH, and a SINGING lead like a boogie, nirvana man! hth`s.

Agree with Jim....

The 97 version, with the lack of feedback on V1b and the bright cap on the master has a great clean!!! The OD ain't half bad either!! :D

I'll third that!

The 1997 amp I built had a super transparent ultra chimy clean sound, my non-HRM amps are a bit darker sounding, of course it could be the the EL34's vs the 6L6's.

Are there layouts of a 97? or just schems? And dog, you should make your own "completed" layout... be nice to have one with all the mods on it:)

I built a 97 as my first Dumble and found that there were things missing, and things I didn't like.

#1) there are no snubber caps on the OD stages. Very important for the Dumble tone. See the Hybrid-A schematic for these.

#2) I didn't care for the HRM tone stack, the post OD tone stack built using trimmer pots as a "set and forget" tone ckt. I removed it and made appropriate changes to the RC (with the help of dogears Scott).

#3) the additional switches in the tone stack are left out. I like the boost and deep switches myself, some folks like the jazz/rock switch for the sweetness.

Otherwise this is a really great sounding ckt.

Plan on using Vishay/Dale resistors on the plate load resistors, plus the slope resistors in the tone stacks. Carbon film is fine for the rest, but personally I prefer metal film. Orange drop PS series are best for all caps in the uF range, ceramic disk for all caps in the pF range.

You'll also find that every amp is slightly different. Little differences in xformers and lead dress make it sound different, so you may find yourself adjusting values a bit. Buy parts accordingly to avoid shipping charges.

I'd get some extra ceramic disks, 10pF, 47pF, 120pF, 330pF, 390pF, 470pF. The smaller ones are for the bright caps, larger for snuppers and tone stacks.

Get some extra electrolytics for cathode bypass, 1uF and 4.7uF, plus some .2uF 100V caps for small adjustments to these. Piggyback the .2uF over the 1uF or 4.7uF to add depth.

I've built using both Marshall replacement xformers and Fender replacement xformers. One of my amps has a Hammond PT and Fender Bassman OT and sounds great. I prefer the Fender OT's and 6L6's but one I built for a friend with Marshall xformers and EL-34's sounds great, he loves it. There's a distinct difference in charactor.

Good luck.

My only advice.... triple check your parts list, and order double what you think you need... you will always need extra parts for tweaking, and i seem to spend more in shipping cause i have to order 4 times cause i forget 1 stupid part:)
