The way Geek dialed it, it sounded 100% Marshall. So yeah, EVH played an HRM Dumble and 335 through an EVM 12L open back cab!

Yes it sounds very Marshally with the gain cranked like that. Not my favorite way to tweak a Dumble but sounds great here. I just can't play that stuff, very cool to hear the versitility of these amps.

BTW, I can say for sure that tone is NOTHING like EVH. I saw him last week, not even close, not in the ballpark, very cool but no EVH

I guess Jalle and I were pointing out the obvious, and that is that Geek is copping the EVM Hot for the Teacher stuff pretty good.

I caught that. Thing is.. EVH went all the way to clean. Even though EVH is an arogant SOB it was great to see him playing well again, and my 22 year old son walked out saying "That was AWESOME".

I guess the big guy didn't call it HRM for nothing! Interesting thing is that my amp has a Heyboer Twin OT and 6L6s tubes... So much for "to get that kind of sound you need EL34s." I will mention that if you flip down the mid switch and lower the drive, there are some more gentle sounds to be had. Never as sweet as the non HRM, unless you crank the mid trimmer and turn the treble down and even then it's only an approximation.

Bottom line, to me, is that the key to getting good sounds out of the stock HRM circuit is to turn the preamp volume UP (6-7), the OD trimmer down (25K to ground) and then the drive to taste. Very much unlike my non HRMs, in which I turne the preamp volume down (to 4 or so), the trimmer to about 35-40K to ground, and the drive control to taste.

These videos have pushed me over the edge to do a D-Clone for my next project. I love the traditional Dumble sound, but was worried about not getting enough punch.

Well, that is not a lot of gain, all things considered. The Skyliner HRM, i.e. that amp. is actually lower gain than the non HRM version. Thing is, in a non HRM the sound is "pretty" and thus gives the illusion that there is not too much gain. On the other hand, the HRM gets nastier and nastier as you turn the drive control up.

At least early on, the natural position of a Dumble clone is up on blocks like the one in the video. This especially applies to HRM's. They don't spend much time in the cab. It helps if you have a buddy (or a guitar clip) so you can adjust something, hear it from different places in the room and adjust it some more.

A really good mod would be to make a cab like the old Traynor YBA-1's where the top unscrews without having to remove the chassis.

Skip
