Sounds great!!!! Perfect early morning, first cup of coffee feel.
Thanks Deric !
Yeah, it was quite early morning Did put the kids at school and went out with our dog and then recorded it.
I still like EL34's more on this build than 6L6's. I purhaced a pair of Svetlana / SED EL34's and to my big surprise the low notes were lots of muddier with the Svetlanas than with JJEL34's.
I assume you have the input OD trimmer set extremely low, since you say that your OD Level (OD drive pot) was quite high? Or is it thet other way around? Can you elaborate a bit more on your OD input section? 220k, 100k trimmer etc.

If I remember right I have 220k to 100k trimmer that is less than 50% open.
Drive pot was full open. OD master was at 9 o'clock (separate masters for clean and OD) - little more than bedroom level I quess.
Funny thing with the amp is that it does not get very mushy sounding eaven when the drive pot is on very high setting. It just gets more and more harmonics and singing quality. Semihollow obviously starts to feedback much easier than the strat. Actually I can't play the amp with the 335-style guitar with this high drive settings. It is just too much. The strat is just ok with such amount of gain.

Strat is diy with Kinman PU's.
Nice clip! I had Kinmans at one time, but could not quite get the sound I wanted out of them, but then again that was before I built my clone. Maybe I should try them again. Your setup sounds great! Also, more and more I am thinking I have got to do a non-HRM.
Are the SED's the ones with the "Winged C" logo? I understand there are other tubes made with the Svetlana name that are made in another plant and may be of different quality from the original Svetlanas. I was just about to order some "Winged C" EL34's (made in St. Petersburg plant) but your comment about the bass has got me worried. I have JJ's now and like them a lot but one of them got microphonic with only 1 year of use so I was thinking maybe they aren't so durable. Maybe I just got a bad one and should keep using them.

To me the nonHRM seems to work better. As Ayan pointed to me also it is easier to play than HRM. I understand that there are really good players on this forum that like the HRM more and get fabulous sounds out of it. NonHRM just seems to suit better to my noodling

I took couple pics of the tube. I dont know what the winged C-logo is but I suppose that is just what the tubes are.

Do You play alot? I mean one year seems to be it if You play the amp alot.
I biased the tube to same iddlecurrent than the JJ's and to my big surprise the sound was far from the JJ's. I've never before heard such a clear difference between the lower frequences on the sound when changing different brand of tubes in but also I have not played with the different tubes alot earlier.
pman wrote:another winner mat! did you build this amp from a kit? i'm sure your touch plays into it but man you get some nice tones out of it.
Thanks pman
No kit, its a scratch build. I've built earlier one nonHRM that I like alot.
The 'new' one strated as HRM. Then I went trough BM + several tweaks from suggestions from the forum but never did got it to sound the way I would like it to.
Now it is something like nonHRM, skyline,100k plates on V1, seperate masters(still from the HRM), EL34's, built in dlator....

Looks like the real "Winged C" (Black "C" inside the red circle) made in St. Petersburg. I wonder why the lows are so different?

I play about 10 hours a week, I guess. Over the years I have not retubed any of my tube amps very often. Certainly they lasted more than a year. I bias these at 32ma so they are not working that hard. I actually have a Twin that has had the same tubes for about 20 years! It was my main amp too. It started getting a little weak about 3 years ago so it definitely needs new tubes, but they did not go bad like the JJ, just got softer over the years. I think tubes were made better back then also. My Twin has a mix of Sylvania and GE tubes in the output (that's a no-no) and RCA and GT pre's. The JJ in my HRM is now crackling which I take to mean it is arcing, so it is officially done and has been removed to avoid burning up something in the amp. I am tempted to try some other brands just to get a feel for the differences though I am really happy with my tone at the moment. I won't fault JJ for having one bad tube and have had good luck and sound out of them in other amps.

Search thegearpage.net with name 'Althrax'. IIRR thats where I got it.
Tonegeek,
I think You are right with the tube life. I don't have such an experience with the tubes to tell how long they actually last. I have 7 diy amps and I play only one of them regulary (with different tubes) and the others get played very occasionally.
