How many knobs does an ODS need?

Post by nuke »

I'm building an ODS-style amp out of stuff I have hanging around. I decided to use a JTM45 style chassis that's been various experimental amps over the years (as I recall, it is Weber JM45 chassis from many years ago).

It's your usual 4-input, 6 pots, pilot lamp, and Marshall-style standby and power large bat switches. I'm pretty sure I can relocate the pilot lamp and get 7 pots on the panel. Maybe move power and standby to the back, but that's a bit of work.

There are various iteration of ODS with varying knob counts from 6 to 9, plus switches on the front panel. Just sorting out in my head how many I really need/want.

Thoughts?

I've built to the main ODS board to fit the chassis (high-plate/HRM style), and have started the various power supply boards and relay boards. Just really a question of how many knobs do I need on the front, what can be relocated to the rear or left out.

I would do Volume, Treble, Middle, Bass, OD, Ratio, and Master on the front. Presence on the back. Or a switched pot on the master with the older accent arrangement there.

Seems sensible. I think 7 front panel pots are doable by moving the pilot light. I was maybe thinking concentric master volumes for clean and drive? I have some concentric pots I could swap the resistor wafers to get the needed values.

How about front panel switches? I might be able to squeeze some mini toggles in on the panel, but not a lot of them. Between space and dodging the existing holes, there's not a lot of margin to work with.

Do you have room for switches above the pots like two-rock does it?

If not, I would hardwire it in rock mode, PAB switch on the back with a relay and find somewhere for the mid switch. I don't use the bright switch often, so I wouldn't miss it personally.

Did some drilling tonight and I got 8-pots on the face of the Weber 6M45 chassis. I enlarged the pilot light hole, and put a new 3/8" hole in between the second pair of input jack holes.

This is what it looks like with the power switches, 8 random stunt pots installed and a couple of input jacks. They're all straight across and evenly spaced. Drifted the pot at the left maybe 1/64" low, but it isn't noticeable.

With the right knobs and cabinet setup, I should be able to install the switches. Not in the traditional ODS position, but between the knobs and above.

Maybe someday I'll spring for a printed circuit board for the front panel with labels.

I've got a Peavey Vypyr head that I paid doodly-squat for just for the cabinet, less than wood would have cost to make one and I have a perfectly working Vypyr 30 watt modeling head chassis to unload. Someone had already dressed it up kinda-Dumblish with aluminum trim instead of the batwing plastic and painted the tolex light blue. It looks kinda cool inspite of itself.
