Anyone tried 25w Greenbacks with an ODS?

Post by Rob Livesey »

Hi Chaps,

With all the talk about how great the 65 is for the ODS, has anyone tried 25's with a 50w head? Celestion say that the 65 was created to be a higher power handling version of this speaker.

Cheers,
Rob.

Yes!! I like them a lot :)

to me they sound brighter, you need a really smooth amp and beam-blockers on the cab, but cleans are really improved and you get also that classic 70's rock sound if you like

I like them, but it almost seems as though you need another type of speaker mixed in with them, like a g12 75 or classic lead 80- JMHO.

Hi Chaps,

Thanks for the replies. I have this cab:

I'm thinking of using this but at the moment it's closed back. I could easily make an open oval hole back panel for it and put in some 25's I have a chance of getting.

With the 25's which do you prefer, open back (oval) or closed back?

Cheers,
Rob.

Hi,

As much as I've tried to like 30's (because everyone else does), I've had pre-rolas, rola greenbacks, mid 70's blackbacks and those anniversaries, I've never got on with them. With a Marshall, the 25's have always been sweeter in the mids and smoother on top. I actually didn't like those anniveraries very much at all, I found them to have too a woofy bottom and a harsh top with no real mids that I liked, they've gone now, which is why I'm asking about 25's again with the ODS.

Sadly I sold my last ones with a 70 basketweave 4x12 a couple of years ago after injuring my back carrying the bleeding thing. The oversize 2x12 is a good compromise. I'm going to make an oval cut out back panel and give them a try.

It's odd, the same thing happened with Vox amps, I must have had about a dozen JMI AC30's, even a black panel 4 holer, which to be fair was the best one. My heart wants to love them, but get them on a gig and I always want to kick it off the stage. I thought it was me, or that the amp wasn't right. Then I completely rebuilt one down to the last solder joint, went through it with a fine tooth comb, NOS Mullards the lot. Got to the gig and wished I had left it at home!. Just not for me I suppose.

I played my tweaked D'Lite through a Marshall 4x12 with the Heritage 25W Greenback speakers. Awesome tone!

2x12 closed back! I've tried an open back cabinet but I can't get enough low freqs out of it. A 4x12 closed back should also be a lot better.

Green Backs

2 Greenbacks, 2 V/30's in a cross pattern. Heavily doped surrounds and cones in a 4 X 12 cabinet.

Very Impressive.
