Got an EVM12L...it's kinda middy/bright

Post by Fischerman »

I just recently bought an EVM12L that was the OEM speaker in a Mesa Thiele. I put it in a open-back 1x12 (kind of a Tweed Deluxe extension type cabinet) and it's pretty middy and bright...just like the EVM12L that was in my Mesa Mk III combo I had many years ago. The clarity is nice but...the frequency response seems like a step in the wrong direction (or maybe the frequency response of my amp is what's off).

How much extra low end do you get from a Thiele type cabinet? Do you guys find that an EVM12L kind of 'needs' a ported cabinet? For those that have compared several different ported 1x12 cabs...what's your favorites and what are some dogs to avoid? Is the Mesa widebody decent? My amp head is 25.5" wide (Bandmaster Reverb chassis/cab) so it's almost impossible to find a 1x12 such that it won't hang over the sides (at best)...but I'm more concerned with the tone.

Thiele cab helps, EV12S is a far better match IMHO.

I feel like all of those high power/large magnet speakers need a beam blocker. EV SRO, EV12L, Altec 417, JBLs', et al.

So far the two that I have in my 2x12 open back are really sounding killer to me. :D

A Beam blocker is a device that is placed in front of the speaker (on or inside the grill, and centered on the cone. It blocks that straight on bright tone you get when you are in front of the speaker. It diffuses that "beam". SRV was know to put duct tape on the grill to prevent this.

You can get real nice devices at webervst.com

IMO, the EVM12L does not need one. Is your speaker new??

I put some gaffer's tape over the grill cloth in front of the cones on mine. They were a little bright for me.

Thanks,

Okay, now for something completely different:

Remember those stockings called "Leggs?" They came in an egg-shaped plastic container. In one problematic Boogie cabinet I had, I put one of those in instead of a standard Weber beam blocker (which is really just a piece of metal with a dustcap glued to it), and got this really nice, much more diffused sound on stage. Until you got nearly at 90 degrees to the beam, you could hear almost the whole spectrum. And certainly no beam.

YMMV.

"Is that an egg in your Boogie ...or are you just happy to see me."
