What your talking about is balance? one of the more difficult aspects of building an ODS. I am constantly fighting the low enddonvan wrote: ↑Fri Feb 26, 2021 11:09 pmThanks for the responses Smitty and Gil.ayan wrote: ↑Fri Feb 26, 2021 7:41 pm
... but I would always find myself looking for band aids to help with the OD being to bassy, or too harsh in the highs, or the clean being too dull. After I gutted and rebuilt my two amps (both non HRM Skyliners, one low plate and one high plate) with help from Tony and Jelle, I finally felt my amps were "right."
I've been resisting it but I think it's time to take a closer look at component types.
The Music Man build in the Pics was taken from an original ODS posted by Audiodog
Everyone is different however for myself as long as the Low end in the OD side stays firm the amp will still want to sustain and sing. here are a few things you should consider (along with what Gil mentions with parts selection very important)
Raising the values on either OD Drive and OD level 0r OD trigger (100k/250k) will add in more bass and darken the sound.
Measure every coupling cap before it goes in and keep a tight tolerance (a must)
Check the orientation of each cap (Keeps lows firm)
Use High quality low ESR bypass caps(again firm)
NOS CTS Pots on gain controls (OD Level/Drive/Mstr) This is why I believe Dumble used all the same CTS pots here to help balance both channel's
The other thing you can do is the 102 mod? 40uF filtering on V2..(helps a little)
Output and preamp tube types matter
Cabinet/Speakers
Everyone has their own opinion on how much is too much or not enough so here are some things I consider when it comes to balance
