D-style amp planning

Post by rfgordon »

I just can't STAND it anymore! The clips are making me nuts, so I'm gonna make a Dumble sort of beast. As I've been reviewing and studying all the various schematics and layouts in the files section, I'm getting prepared. I'm thinking of starting with one of the DLite variants without the relay, since I've not done switching before. I want to get the feel for making the tone happen before I branch out into switching like that.

I do have a question, though, how crucial to the tone is the LFB loop? I put one in another amp (5F6A inspired), and it's kinda cool, but how much does it contribute to the characteristic Dumble tone? Is is a must have or a nice to have?

It's not critical, in fact Dumble dropped it when he went to the HRM style amp. I have one amp with a switch on the LNFB, 22M/.047u | off | 44M/.047u. I find that I use it either on the 44M or more often off.

Are those values for the resistor/ cap on the presence control?
Or for the grids on the PI?

bobs quoting vals for the LNFB loop.

Those would be pins 6 and 7 off cl2. plate and grid.
it really is a journey, and you just cant farm out the battle wounds

I'm leaning toward this D'Lite design, as it's simplified without all the switches. However, which of the Rock/Jazz, Mid, Deep, Bright and PAB switches are the ones y'all use most to get the tone you want?

You can compensate for no LNFB in 2 ways:
1. series a cap into the OD entrance to eliminate some lows
and/or
2. raise the resistance before the entrance trimmer (more = less lows)

That said - if you have a really nice fat clean sound you need the LNFB or the Overdrive is too muddy and has that fuzz box with the highs rolled off sound. Even if you do 1 and 2 above.
