Parallel stages for V2???

Post by richon »

Has anyone use Parallel stages for V2???

I'm not looking for a normal dumble Overdrive sound

So driving V1 into a parallel V2 would have some good sound?

Hi,

A parallel tube will have about 70% of the noise of a single tube, and sound more like a lower mu tube (think octal tube like 6SL7), lower resistance plate load is lower, twice the current capability, twice the capacitance, the same voltage capability, twice the transconductance, etc.

In short, it will sound smoother.

Hi,

Having slept on the matter, the V2a-V2b stages when paralleled would have half the load the of a single tube stage which may require adjustment of the pots or the values of the Pots in the OD gain and level section to get the a tone similar or dissimilar to the non-paralleled values.

Of course since you goal is something outside of a "normal" Dumble Overdrive Sound, (whatever that is), this might be what you are looking for.

Another thought would be adjustment of the plate resistor and cathode values in V2. Gar Gilies used values as high as 470k in some of his amp 12AX7 tubes and others have used lower values (47K). Values between the 220k-180k-150k-120K-100k normally found could be explored.

Replacing V2 with different 12A_7 tubes (5751, 12AY7, or if you have abundant heater current 12AV7, or 12BZ7), an Octal tube (6SC7 this is tricky as only one cathode for both sections, 6SL7, 6SN7) /2 Octal tubes (2X6SQ7) or dual Pentode/triode tube (with the Pentode wired as a triode) might be what you are looking for.

I am sure someone has contemplated a ODS version with Octal tubes in the preamp at some time.

As with any tube amp, every value changed will/may/most likely require other values to be changed, and tubes vary from sample to sample (even in the same brand and manufacture date) behave differently. Every parameter that can be adjusted must be adjusted.

Patience and perseverance when fine tuning the circuit should give you hours of entertainment.

Best Regards,

Steve

This borrows from D-style topology but uses something different for the OD channel.

Just to stir your thinking............. I've built both of these. My son has the Tweed OD Lite and a friend of mine has the Double C amp.

soundclips for Double C is here:
