Show us your Clean Channel

Post by talbany »

Most of the clips posted here sport the OD side.. For me I use my clean channel a bit more than I do my OD side so I am always concerned with how the clean sounds and just as important feels.. IMO the more complex Skyliner stack is a bit more difficult to keep consistent due to all the switching and PAB ..Here is one I just finished that came off more to my tastes.. I personally like a fairly bright chimey clean especially for my Strats!!..I also prefer the clean to stay clean all the way up and just compress like this one ( BTW 150uf on the plates) on single note runs and breaks up slightly when I dig into a chord....This one does not have the LNFB on V2,bright cap is 150pf..Anyway show us your favorite clean channel and let us know why you like it and or changes to it..

The clip starts out brushing the strings,,Goes to the bridge then neck then Middle back to #2 bridge/middle qwack pos.. EJ Strat through a D-Lator LexiconLXP processed..

What do you think!!

Sounds fantastic Tony. I'd love to hear it with a better mic. It seems a little compressed and I can't tell if it is the mic or the amp. But it has good 'pop' and you can hear it bring out the best qualities of each pickup or combination.

My main guitar for the last thirty eight years has been a Strat. For me the important thing is that the guitar really sounds distinct in each pickup position. Why the hell play a Strat if it sounds the same regardless of which pickup you have selected?

I usually go just a tad more bassy. I typically try to get the best sound for the neck pickup, I want it to sound like a big piano bass note, and the rest falls into place. This is my synesthesia kicking in, but the neck needs to sound blue and slightly hollow.

I'm pulling up a chair and popping some popcorn for this thread. I'd really like to hear more clean examples of all the Dumble variations, especially with Strats.

One last thing. What were your tone control settings?

My standard settings were I believe..Volume 6-7 T-7 M-3-4 B-3 P-7

This one was loaded with CTS (accept for the mid pot!)

If I flip in the brite cap I'll lower the treble to 4-5
Some of this is compression from the camera but my point was that on this particular amp you can hear the neck Pup pop and wont really break up..It really is a strange thing on this one why it has such a soft feel and still loaded with 150uf on the plates.. I can only figure it's Power transformer regulation..FWIW here is the OD side (gain set low) Vol rolled back at the end of clip..

Sounds great, Tony!

Here's my #102 clone clean with my Strat. At first I didn't like the clean channel as much as the overdrive on this amp, but it's grown on me and I prefer it to my Showman now. It has kind of a soft, compressed feel when you play it but it's still very clear, especially with the LNFB engaged. Anyway... I like a clean sound that is fat, but clear with lots of sustain. It's pretty much dead clean when I play it at home, but it breaks up a bit live.

http://youtu.be/1Vfae4GmKkA

Details of recording:
Amp: #102 clone with precision power supply, higher B+ PT (460-470VDC) and vintage '70s Twin OT. V1 preamp plates around 210VDC, v2 plates around 215VDC. Biased at 40ma plate current. NOS Pihers in signal path, NOS Electras on plates and cathodes. Combination of NOS CTS and new PEC pots. Orange drop poly caps. 5k6 grid stoppers on the power tubes. Pretty much stock part values otherwise, with a few close value subs here and there and different droppers and bias range resistors to get the voltages right. Layout: https://tubeamparchive.com/download/file.php?id=24655
Amp Settings: Volume - 6, Treble - 4, Mid - 6, Bass - 3, Master - 7, Presence - 4 1/2, Bright - off, Mid - off, Rock - on, LNFB - on.
D-lator Settings Send - 5, Reverb Mix - 4, Return - 3, Bright switches off.
Effects: Guitar straight into amp with 15' George Ls cable. D'lator with a touch of built in Belton brick based reverb in loop.
Guitar: Classic '60s Mexican Strat with Lollar Special pickups. Pickup combinations used: neck/middle, neck, middle/bridge, bridge, neck/bridge (through pull pot).
Speakers: Two Forte 3D 1x12" cabs loaded with Celestion G12-65 speakers.
Recording: Video shot on iPhone 4.

Thanks, guys! I'm really happy with this amp and couldn't have ever even come close to putting something together this cool without all your help. I'm not sure of exactly what does it, but the balance of frequencies is really nice in this thing. I've never really played any other "D" style rig before, so my only frame of reference is other amps (mostly Fender) and the few tweaks I've done to this one over the last few months. I was thinking that the Skyliner EQ was the thing that gave it that fat-but-clear hi-fi punch, but now I'm not so sure.

I'm going to convert the preamp on a single channel non-trem Fender Super Reverb copy I built a while back over to the same values as the clean side of my #102 and hear how that sounds. That thing always sounded like crap so maybe some of the mojo from the Dumble preamp will breathe some life into it. :)

Here are two videos with IMO some rather nice clean channel sounds of a transition generation "classic" ODS 100W into a Dumble 4x12" speaker cabinet (no mic in front of the two Fender amps). Sometimes the position of the pickup switch is visible.

I haven't seen this one before. But you can hear when Stevie flicks his SSS from jazz to rock at the start.

Hi,

Clean and clean boost (not PAB) with the strat's nek and bridge pickups.
Plus drive and driva+boost.

I'm with Teleguy61. Mostly interested in the trannys used in these 3 great sounding amps as a 102 (maybe a small special or a 124) will be my winter project? I'm a sucker for great cleans.

From his earlier post I see that aflynt used the '68 Showman PT, and a '73 Quad Reverb OT and choke. Lots about that amp already. I'll have to go back and have another look at that thread. https://tubeamparchive.com/viewtopic.php?t=18453 Great sounds.
