Is it a Dumble the amp for me? from soul to stoner

Post by whitewave »

Hi,

I need some suggestions, cause I'm going to buy a Dumble clone from Ceriatone.
I play in two bands, first is a stoner rock and the other a raggae - funky - soul - Allman and so one jam band.

Now I'm playing a Traynor YCV 40 WR, with many very good pedals is quite good to obtain the souns I need, but I miss the distortion coming from the amp as I always had.
Some months ago I had a 1986 plexi from Ceriatone, it was very good, but too much bass frequencies for my PRS, and it was quite difficult to have a clean sound with a non master vol single channel head.
I know Nik quality, and I'd like to buy again from him.

Clean samples of Dumble clones are simply perfect, gorgeous sounds, that sustain on such a sweet sound....

But as for distortions I have some doubts. If I could afford one I'd buy a Fuchs ODS 50, so I guess a Dumble could be quite enough similar to have all the tones I need. Mid gain Robben ford lead is where the amp shines, I like it obviously but I need more and no one makes rythms samples with it.
I know it won't be a JCM800 or a Matchless for that hard rock stuff like Pearl Jam, that's not my sound even if I play that styff, but I wonder if I can get a smooth, fat, quite tight sound for chords, or Warren Haynes like rythms.
Some samples shows a spongy tone on chord, while the youtube d'lite one makes me feel more confortable in buying this amp.

Is a 6L6 Ceriatone Dumble the one for me?

Thanks.

Greetings,

Dumble clone, D'Lite, is not sold by Ceriatone (as seen from their Web site). The kit is sold by the Brown Note, as seen from their link

I've never seena Ceritone Dumble clone, I don't know that they make one. Can you post the link?

As for Dumble being for you, I can't answer that. The amp itself is not really a hi gain machine, but with pedals you can push it to death.

ceriatone or brownnote...as Bob said pedals will send it right over the edge..I use a variety of pedals in front of mine and the amp sounds awesome this way too.

Thanks to everyone.

This page o Steelbender site has great video samples of a Fuchs ODS 50. The hi gain one is simply perfect for me and I love the others.

I'm only a bit afraid about the character of the distorted tones, I don't want spongy sounds or "tweed" like, I prefer a much more articulate and balanced distortion, smooth, with lots of sustain and so on.

Are you still suggesting me that a Dumble clone with a pedal can achieve that kind of sound?

a bogner exsctacy homebrew is what ya need man!! Great cross between a plexi/and a dumble, not too mushy, but gobs of sustain, killer blues tones as well as hi-gain..go to bogner site and listen to clips..

I agree with Brown Note I use a TS9 clone in front an I get a good amont of tight distortion for some rock stuff. I am in a jam band myself and I love my D clones.

Maybee I'll try to get some recordings up.

I'm quite sure it has enough gain with a pedal for hard rock, but I'm wondering about distortion character.
I'm listening to many samples and many have sag and spongy feel, I don't want sag with my chords, I hate it.

It's strange to have the possibility to play a Dumble but thinking to spend money on a Orange Rocker 30 head.

Thanks again to everyone.

PS: Bogner are without any doubts great amps, but Bogner to me means Shiva, as a modern and versatile head my vote goes to SLO100. But they're completely out of my price range.

It sounds like you should build a Trainwreck.

:)
you're not completely wrong but....

Trainwreck is a beast under fingers, a too much difficult amp to tame, I don't want that kind of amp.
I need a clean tone (a bit of edge on it it's not a problem) that I can use with the guitar volume pot on ten and strumming hard, a single channel hard rock amp can't give me that kind of sound, I'm thinking to plexis too and I had a 1986 Ceriatone plexi for some months.

This is why plexi, jcm800, express and so on would be great in my setup only if I have the possibility of owning two heads, a Fender-like and a Marshall-like.

Moreover I do prefer different distorted sounds over the EL34 aggressive tones. 6L6 tones first of all to my hears are a lot deepers and more defined on basses, and then they're not as grainy.
I'll try to explain better, I know that a more aggressive amp would be perfect for some of my needs, but I can accept to have a bit less than perfect sound in order to have gorgeous cleans and versatility.
I play in a Stoner band, but I love to spend some afternoons with a dear friend of mine jamming at just more than bedroom volumes, from Ben Harper to Bob Marley, from Stones to Allmans.
A Trainwreck is way too much for that, both for decibels and tone.

Thanks.

PS: excuse me, I think I made many mistakes in this post, but I'm italian and it's difficult to explain this nuances of tones.

I've got one of ceriatone's prototype dumble chassis which I put d'lite circuit in. It's not on his site, still being developed.

Nik can build a non hrm late '80 50w Dumble clone.
I trust him 'cause I bought an amp for me and order other for some friends.
I'm still wondering about sag for chords, doesn't anyone know how far is a Fuchs ODS from a '80 Dumble?
Does the non-HRM sound way more midrangey and "vintage" like?

To my ears the non-hrm is a bit more aggressive where the hrm is sweeter and smoother.
