Can of worms... Other than EVM, speaker for a 100 watt combo

Post by Bob-I »

Im having Taylor build a combo cab for my 100 watt bluesmaster build. I really like the 12-65 tone but it's only a 75 watt speaker. I hate to spend a bunch of money, only to blow a speaker.

I have a tonker, too honky in the mids, swamp thang, bottom heavy, but together they're heavenly.

Any suggestions?

Texas heat? Red white and blues, Other suggestions?

I mainly use a Texas Heat in a closed back 1x12 with my 50W Bluesmaster. It sounds pretty good with clean amps too. IMO, it doesn't color things with too much grit or sound honky. I'd buy another one if this one died. I haven't tried the other Eminence speakers so I couldn't give you an opinion versus those.

Sure, you got one?

They're impossible to find and big bucks to recone.

Is it a 112?

you're kind of limited in options with just one speaker...

if it's a 212 then 2 100 watt scumincos are awesome.

I really liked this speaker in the 100 watt Zingaro- when I tried it at the LA show. I believe this was a Celestion G12K 100-

That said- MY favorite speaker for the Bluesmaster circuits is the Alnico Gold.

I would like to try some higher powered Scumnicos with that amp.
Does your mother know you talk that way??

That amp sounds amazing.

I wouldn't think a gold would hold up, but the scum seems like a good possibly.

I've been liking a Swamp Thang in my 100 watt combo. Not a bluesmaster, though. I feel like it has plenty of top end?

Hmmm... Maybe I should try it by itself again. Somehow when I put it in the 2x12 with the tonker the combo just sounded great.

Way better choice than a RWB in a cab by itself, IMHO.

i use a Celestion G1265 or an Eminence Texas Heat in a small oval ported 1x12 cab with a 100w amp( ODS Skyliner and Bluesmaster) all the time when I have to play grab and go gigs with great results.

I seldomly get loud enough to even come close to blowing the G1265, and unless you play loud to the point of ear bleed levels I doubt you will too.

I'm a little gun shy with speakers. In the 70's I used JBLs in a twin and blew them so often I kept a spare recone in the car. When one was out for recone I kept one of the original oxfords around. Used it one time not realizing the JBLs were reverse phase. Wow

I never play loud but I'm still concerned. I may grab a Texas Heat and try that and the swamp thang before I go for the Celestion. I know I'll go through several speakers before I'm settled. Gotta give each one 2-3 months for a full breakin too.

I have a 12a that I will try, but I've found it to be a little dull. Commonwealth

Lots of great ideas, thx everyone.
