To clarify:

SSS sn#4 was very clean, and was, well with a strat at least, impossible to get to break up. Very pretty highs from that amp.

SSS sn#1 was more gritty and raw and easier to play. And yes, it does break up easily...it is very loud too.

I have seen JM use SSS sn#2 and the cleans were clean, exactly like the JM clip that was posted. Think "Dancing in a burning room" style cleans.

But I cannot remember hearing anything that sounds like the ceriatone clip. Also, the information I have on several SSS amps does not produce these sounds either. So, please understand my confusion if a clip with the phrase 'SSS' is posted on youtube that does not match my datapoints.

Having said that, it sounds like a fun amp. :D

To answer your question: I have not played Dumble SSS sn#2.

Which specific Dumble SSS amplifiers have you played?

Jelle
haha none. There's only one in my country which hopefully ill be able to play soon :D

Apparently (from my guitar teacher who HAS played it) its very loud, amazingly clean, sounds awesome pumped, black and silver, and interestingly - its been de-gooped.
Apparently someone paid him a tonne to draw it out.

ER wrote:Hi Max- I saw El rayo X play a number of times, sometimes with only the SSS. Mr. Dave would make a big deal out of the intro and really crank it up to get it humming (or singing), taking a few theatrical moments to dial in the amp to get that sound.
Yes, ER, I remember him to perform on stage with only his SSS, too. And indeed, often he played it dialed in to deliver some rawer tones, AFAIR even when he used it for recordings. But some of the 1st generation ODS amps (and some of the "low plate classics" I know, too) can IMO deliver a kind of clean and overdrive tone that's a bit similar to the tone of David's SSS if you set these ODS amp up in a way to sound like this, and David's ODS had a SSS mod, as Alexander once told in his Guitar Player interview. So I'm often not completely sure if it's his Singer or his ODS what I hear on his recordings, as IMO both can be dialed in to sound a bit similar. And I remember him sometimes using only his ODS, sometimes only his Singer and sometimes both on stage, even when playing more or less the same stuff. David's SSS BTW is one of those I've played and I liked it a lot, clean and "overdriven".
I agree, probably 90% (Mr. Mayer included) that are chasing the "SSS tone" are really looking for a dumbleland with some post production reverb thrown in- Heck a Dumbleland was even what SRV himself REALLY wanted in the first place. To me SRV tone never sounded better than the Texas Flood recordings.
Our personal taste concerning this seems to be very similar. :D
If you already have your #1 copy, period correct tube screamer, and kimono, spend your $2K on a custom shop vibroverb.
The correct kind of hat is very important to achieve the real SRV tone, too. :D

Here you all can find some more MP3 clips of Henry Kaiser's SSS #004 if you might think comparing these with clips of this Ceriatone amp of some use:

But isn't in the end perhaps the most important question - at least looked upon this topic from a practical point of view - if you personally like this Ceriatone amp or not, instead of finding out if it sounds like this or like that and how much truth there is in marketing http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Empero ... ew_Clothes - as interesting as these questions might of course be looked upon this topic from a more theoretical point of view?

Cheers,

Max

Thanks,Max.

I wonder how long until Nik is going to post the schematic on his web site?

I had never heard those clips that Max just posted. All I can say is they sound absolutely awesome!

I've never played any SSS so I can't say what is authentic and what isn't, but Nik's SSS sounds like a winner to me. Better clips with some nice single coils is needed for sure.
