Cabinet for Delta Pro 12A

Post by ChrisM »

Just ordered a Eminence Delta Pro 12A yesterday. Picking up some baltic birch tonight for the 112 cabinet.

So what kinda of cab design works well with this speaker? (not doing a theile).

The 12A is basically an EV12L but with extended low range and not as much highs.
Just to note all my other cabs are ported, either oval port or half open. So I'd maybe like to try something new with this cab build.

Thanks...

I also wonder what design the majority of guys use for a 112.

Are most of them sealed? If so then the dimensions are critical.

If they have a oval port then the dimensions are probably not as critical.

It would be neat to have two 112 cabs so you could take one or two depending on the gig and how big the room is.

I have four of them in a closed back slant half stack. Sounds great. Or maybe it's that red tolex.......

My experience represents the other side of the coin.

I have 2 Delta Pro 12As. I have used them in a Fuchs ODS open back combo, a sealed back Lopo 1x12 cab, and in a 2x12 oval ported cab. BTW, the Lopo is a crappy cab that no speaker sounds good in.

IMO, that speaker is lacking in high end detail and sounds somewhat muted. Almost like there is a blanket over it. I find it to be 'just OK' with a bright amps, and I don't like it at all with amps that aren't. The detail that I like to hear in the highs is not there for me. I have 2 'real' EV12Ls from the early 80s and they are a completely different animal.

In the end, I can't tell you what cab they work well with, because I haven't found it and I'm not sure I will.

+1 on the Delta Pro - quite dark
-1 on the EV12 L - it's too piercing for my taste

Fane Studio 12L is a great mix of the two above speakers - really nice in a thiele cab

I am not worried about the speaker. I have read reviews of many people raving about it and of course some saying it was not so great. I play single coils and I am not too found of bright amps so I think the Delta Pro will suit me well.

Anyways...
After doing a bit more reading and research it seems the speaker will not do well in your average open back 112. So I am going to build the cab as a oval port 112. I'll probably try it open back before putting the back panel on, just to see how it is.

I would suggest a sealed cabinet between 1 and 2 cubic feet. I have only ever used this speaker in a Thiele cabinet but looking at the cabinet designs on Eminences site this should work nicely.

My goal is not to beat up the speaker here. That speaker is good for certain things. I play single coils as well because I like the clean chime. One of my favorite clean sounds is a Strat through a Super or Twin Reverb with the volume set at about 4. The Delta Pro will not deliver the chime or the quack with those rigs. Good luck and let us know how it works for you.

Great that tone is too bright and not full enough sounding for me.

I have a Lopo 212 and have to agree, I couldn't get anything to sound good in that.
It just always sounded boxy and cheap, even with EVM 12L's in it.

But on the other hand, I believe Lopo builds all of the cabs for Glaswerks.
So go figure.
But they are probably Gary's designs and better materials are probably being used.

Lopo builds a lot of custom cabs. The problem is you have to watch what size the cabinets are on their site or email and ask. They make many different sizes of 1-12 and open or closed or convertible.

I got stuck with some kind of minature 1-12 cabs from them that were on sale, geez they are perfect for my grand kids. :)

I like their tolex quality and I usually get custom orders now.

They build mine to my specs and a LOT of other companies. Big and small. Never tried one of their standard cabinets, only the stuff that I sell so I cant comment on the Lopo line of cabinets.

I will say they are fast to react to changes in the design and have been great to deal with over the past few years as an OEM provider.

Is this oval port 1x12 going to have the traditional port in the back or the oval ports on the sides like the cabinets from forte?

Just a traditional oval port in the back.
