cabinet construction

Post by jaysg »

Does anyone know how Dumble cabs are built? BB vs. pine, 3/4" vs. 5/8" walls, baffle thickness, removable grille, front mount vs. rear mount for speakers?

Depends on the era, Older cabs are pine, no one has ever dis-assembled one to verify the joinery but standard 1/2" box joints, through dovetail, or half-blind dove tail will all work fine.

Transition cabinets are either african mahogany (speaker cabs) or 15mm birch ply. Speakers are all rear loaded with the exception of the tuned/ported 112 cab which is front loaded. All baffles front and back are 15mm birch ply.

You can build a head cab out of anything really, I like the sound of C and better pine for open back cabs, and the birch ply for closed/sealed cabinets.

FWIW I do my heads out of birch ply for strength and resilliance.

Good Luck!

I built a 1-12" in 19...la la, and it almost matches. I used 3/4" void free plywood for sides and baffle, and set it up for front loading and a half back. Right now, it has a rear mounted blue dog and it doesn't sound good. I will change the speaker and try an oval cutout.

[edit]done. my email address looks like spam unfortunately
