Love the #102 amp, then what?

Post by johan »

Hi
I had a 100W #102 built by Erwin on this forum. It's a spectacular amp which I love. Clean tone to die for + the classic Dumble OD.

I still have my DLite amp. Don't know what version to make of it. I have a Prosonic OT and a 50W Plexi OT to choose from.

What would you do?

Another #102, this time a 50W?
Maybe a #183 type of amp?
#124?
John Mayer tuning?

I would suggest a 70's style with 2x12AX7's and 1x12AT7.

I love the voice of these amps. Great additional to a RF or 183 style amp.

2nd or 3rd generation?
Haven't played one and no recording I'm aware of.

In the files section is a layout I did and plenty of info clips of a 2nd generation 70's amp..The 2nd generation will get you very close to the Lowell George and remnants of the famed David Lindley type tone

Also here is my documented 2nd Gen 100w with a brief description

Yesh 2nd gen.

They just FEEL good. Lots of harmonics, feedback etc etc. Less focussed mid range than the later amps, broader sound stage and most importantly, more hair on the notes.

These are a slide players dream.....

That sounds interesting.
Who is actually manufacturing this kind of model among the current crop of builders ?

Probably most... Bludo, Quinn, TR, VVT (Tony can comment) etc etc.

I have built them in both my Overdrive Deluxe and Zingaro platforms

Then if you add a switchable preamp boost (clean boost), they reallly RAWK...

Funny but these comments showed up today in my email. Timing is everything.

For background, the comments are from an owner that has two Glaswerks Zingaros. One is a Desert Sky (#102 spec) and the other is tuned to a 2nd gen amp.
Today, I compared the two amps with the same Tele---back to back.

First was the Desert Sky: So elastic feeling and smooth, I thought "nothing could top this". Very modern sound and feel.

Then the 70s: Could not be more different. Very percussive, almost a cross with an acoustic guitar sound. Plucked lightly, whole chords have definition, even under full gain, with harmonics up the ying yang. Lots of character inherent in the notes, but you have to wring it out of them.

The Desert Sky is an amp that can make almost anyone sound great. The 70s requires a good guitar player to maximize its potential. But so much potential!

I'm going to make a clip where I solo over the same song with each amp. Not only will the tones be vastly different, it will change what and how I play.

Couldn't be happier owning both amps. The more I get around on them, the more different they sound and feel.
