Mr. D.,
what specifically do you prefer in the Quinn 6L6, that's not there in the Quinn EL34?
Also, I'm curious about any opinions as to why HAD chose to go with EL34's in the original #183.

Its even smoother, and has a slightly larger bottom end. Remember Shad made a few changes for no reason other than he liked it more that way. It could very well be those changes, and not so much the EL34/vs 6L6 thing that I like more. I dont even have to touch the controls when I change guitars. Even from a Tele to humbuckers. It just seems to sound exactly how I want it to sound. I dont even use the boost at all, although that sounds great too. I am totally blown away. Its perfect for ME, and thats all that matters! :) The one thing the EL34 amp does have, is its a little more open sounding. Its there when I need that, but not sure I will ever unplug from the 6L6. You lose a little openess, but gain focus. I am very, very lucky to have both, but Mr. 6L6 is what is going to be used 95% of the time. VERY GOOD!

Is there any chance Shad would like to enlighten us to what tweaks make this amp unbelievably good?? I'm sure some would like to try them

Wow, I guess this is the last place this guy can post. I feel bad for Shad he has to be associated with this "person." Shad seems like a good dude.

If you build according to the #183 layout posted on this forum, use good iron, and pots, you will be extremely satisfied with the results. I am with mine.
I've built 8 amps in the last couple years and this amp is the "bomb".
It does it all for me, the OD is awesome.Humbuckers or single coils both sound great, my strat even sounds excellent through this amp.
Amazing design.

Great to hear Chip. I go back and forth between both versions, and am totally blown away by each. They just to it ALL. :D
