6V6 22w combo build -DLite style - some questions

Post by rogb »

Hi all,
Thanks to Bob I 8) 8) , I am going to build a "grab and go" 22w 6V6 with 3 way footswitch and very likely tube reverb into a compact 1x12 cab, probably with a Celestion speaker of some sort.
I'm not going to use the Dlator on this, nor any effects ( well maybe my Keeley TS9...)
Something light and cheap, as I would like to look after my original G12-65 that I use with my OTS.

I have a tiny budget for this so I am likely to make as much as possible myself.

To get this as small as possible, I am planning to go for a blank 16 x 8 x 2 chassis from Bluebell in Scotland http://www.bluebellaudio.com/enclosuresalu2.htm

EDIT I have just ordered a custom chassis 17" x 8" x 2.5" in 2mm ally from http://www.valvepower.co.uk/chassis.htm - £25 sounds OK for that little bit extra room...

and I might try to get Mojotone PT (Vibrolux) and OT (18w Marshall type), just as a change from the Hammond I used in the 6L6, everyone says they sound better....

I dont think I'm even going to use cool front and back panels, just Letraset onto sprayed matt black front

Questions:
1: What would be the best type of footswitch please? I'm guessing a Marshall 3 way

2: Any clues on a cheap and light speaker that will do the job on the 22w. I am going to take this baby on the bus sometimes :D

Any other tips and things to look out for on 22w builds by those who know their stuff ( I know Structo has done one of these, cheers Tom).

There is lot of good information out there, particularly in the Brown Note forum, and this has helped a lot.
Many thanks

I not sure I qualify as "those who know their stuff"
A Marshall 3 way replacement switch is good and cheap
I've used the WGS ET-65(Celestion 65) speaker with OK results its
cheap and light
correct voltages matter V1,V2,V3 etc.

good luck

Thanks I will take a look at that speaker, if it is available in the UK :)

Hi Rog,

A Hammond 1760H maybe a better choice.

I know you said celestion, but if you have a chance to shoot a jensen neo tornado - that's also a good sounding lightweight speaker.

Thanks for the speaker info, much appreciated. Isn't the primary impedance of the 1760H 6,600? I thought it should be around 4,000.

6V6 Transformer

My first build was a 22W 6V6 amp. When I drew the load line for the output valves, I came up with 7,600 ohms plate-to-plate. The Hammond 1650F is a perfect match. When saving weight is a consideration, I use the Eminance "Private Jack" or "Red White and Blues." Attached is my Bill of Materials. Hope this helps.

Iceman, you are a star! The BOM is just great.
I will ltake a good look at the RWB speaker.

I definitely need this amp cause I took my OTS to the rehearsal room just now and I had 6V6s in.. they weren't good at band volumes as the amp is voiced for 6L6. You can hardly tell any volume difference. The 6L6 went back, rebiased and staying in! The clean BF sound is amazing, with the TS9 also amazing.

I don't know if the OD is just right yet, may need some more investigation.
Certainly sounds more lively without the Dlator, it seems to kill off the bloom and harmonics on OD, the clean is fine, shimmering and "girthy"

Still this is another thread, just now...

I have a pair of 6V6s with no home 8)

6v6 pp is opt 6k6, but 8k is ok as well.

Since you're in London I think you can find a Celestion Heritage 65 for a good price.
This is not too bad http://www.lean-business.co.uk/eshop/ce ... p-241.html

Hi Johan, thanks for the link :) , in the UK I use http://www.bluearan.co.uk - pretty good prices.

I think I will go for an Emi, though, just for a change, although I think it will some time before I get round to this build, due to finances
