Gig report with the little Princeton / Dumble

Post by Bob-I »

You all should remember the Hybrid I put into a Princeton chassis/head. Well I got a chance to wring it out today at a small wedding I played. I used a 1x12" closed back with a Red White and Blues that I broke in by playing my stereo through it for about 12 hours. I set the amp on a table, put the SM-57 on it and ran some delay/reverb on the mike. The master was on about 11:00 on this little amp.

Overall, I'm very happy. I used my Hamer 335 copy that has a Seymour in the bridge and a Kent PAF in the neck. I like the PU combination because the bridge is not too bright/thin but the neck is bright enough to not be muddy.

The clean channel is excellent. Bright and warm, sounded great in all 3 PU positions, and even on the neck with the tone rolled off for a warm jazz sound. Since this was a small wedding, I played some easy listening type tunes for the dinner hour, the clean channel gave me everything I needed.

Later I played some classic rock type stuff using the OD channel. With the boost out, it's fat and rich, very Dumble-y. With the boost kicked in it snarls, bright and cutting. I nailed some smooth Santana tones without the boost, neck PU. I also got some nice 60's rock tones using the boost and the bridge PU.

This little amp is everything I need. Now time to add the loop so I can run the Midiverb on it.

Very cool, Bob! So, those little 6V6's really CAN crank out the jams, eh?

I've been studying your schematic to save myself some experimentation. Has it changed much since you drew it up? The things that I'm curious about are your power supply values and grid resistors:
- I'm using a 500R for the choke resistor versus your 330R. Hopefully that won't make things too loose.
- Is the rest of your dropping string still the same? (2k2, 1.5k,10k, 150k)
- Did the bias work out OK with 470R/10k pot/15k tail?
- 1k5 grid resistors. I'm really weak on theory but I've seen them all over the map, from 5k1 to none at all. (Also curious about the 1k screen resistors. Any reason not to use 470R?)
- Lastly, did you ever try the 250kA/.01uF mid circuit in this amp? If so, what did you think of it?

Sorry to hijack your thread. Shoot me a PM if you want to keep the thread on track.

I played at very low volume and used the PA to add reverb and dispersion. I like this method.

Actually it was pretty tight with the 330R so I upped it. Pretty spongy and dynamic.

Yep, the voltages work out to 197/198... 202/205

20K pot but otherwise it's the same.

My understanding of the grid stoppers is that they act with the miller capacitance to kill RFI. They're not even necessary so I stuck with the Fender standard 1.5k. The screens?? I had 1k so I used them. Someday I'd like to experiment.

Not yet.

No hijack, this is about the amp!!

Congrats Bob.
Do you think the 6v6 size amp could keep up with a medium loud drummer? My 50watt is heaps loud ( run the master on 1, rest of the vol controls at 12o'clock) in a band situation.

Yes for sure. I used the amp as a monitor, the audience heard the PA.

What is your PT voltage?

Norm, have you tried using a set of Moose's Express trannies for this size setup yet? (Forgive me if I am misfiring on whomever I am recalling expressing an interest in using such trannies on a Dumble clone.)

Thanks guys. You are both doing some great work.
