Outboard FX & reverb unit

Post by 10thTx »

I thought I had come up with this idea only to be informed Heisthl had already built one. So it's nothing new.

I built this for my Tweed Overdrive Special which uses a 5879 pentode in the OD section for the 2nd gain stage.

I thought I'd share this here since much of the information that made it a successful project was gathered here at TAG. It's an effort to say thanks and to contribute back.

What surprised me is that the unit adds NO noise at idle. In fact, it actually reduced a little bit of hiss without reducing volume or touch sensitivity in playing.

For those of you who use SCH files, there is a SCH schematic and layout here: http://www.el34world.com/Forum/index.php?topic=10624.0

Thanks to the forum for sharing information so generously.

10thtx,

WOW! Deja vu, I was just thinking of something very similar this morning for a build chasing Bonamassa / EJ tones. Thank you!

The chassis was 12 x 6 x 2.

I should mention that I first built it with the typical local negative feedback, but it gave it somewhat of a compressed sound & I did not care for that as well. At least, on the TOS amp, it seems to be more touch sensitive and have a more open tone without the LNFB so I removed it.

Thanks for the nice comments.

Here is another take on the same thing. This uses a DSP processor and have 5 different reverbs, a reverse reverb, delay and modulated delay.

My original reverb a loop was speing based and it is posted in the files section (back about 5 years).

Thanks for posting the schematic and layout. I'm a noob when it comes to reverb, does it require a particular reverb tank or will any on them work? Also, what output transformer did you use?

Thanks,
Ken

The standard fender reverb transformer should be fine. The circuit looks like a standard blackface reverb.

Thanks glasman. So any tank that will work with a Fender will work here? Also, some units have 2 springs while others have 4 springs, what difference does it make?

Thanks

A 4AB or 9AB should work fine. The 9 series sounds for lack of a better term. Bigger and deeper. I like the 9AB2 (medium decay), the 9AB3 can be a bit over the top.

The 4AB3 is also a good choice.

I have a Ruby 3AB2C1B that I bought a few years ago. The tone is great, rich and full, but the delay is measured in years, no milliseconds.

Thoughts on a really good sounding unit like the Ruby with a more reasonable delay?

Gary,

Thanks for sharing the additional information!

I went to your website and listened to the clips of the amps you make.

http://www.glaswerks.com/

Very nice! I really enjoyed listening to them. Great tone. And some great players making the clips for you.
