Nice vist from Scott Lerner!

Post by Mr Dumble »

I have not seen Scott in person in over a year, so it was great to get a phone call from him stating he had an hour or so to stop by...and he just happened to have his Glaswerks 183 attempt with him!

Fisrt off the thing that really matters. Scott is such an excellent, tasteful player. One of my favorite players to listen to in the jazz/rock style for sure, and i wish like anything he would let the rock go and concentrate on jazz. Damn would that guy be insane! (Not that he isnt right now!)

Comparing the amps was difficult, because Scott has a dreaded bright cap on his amp. For MY taste, and to MY ear, no matter how hard he tried, the Quinn was smoother, less brittle, and had all the magical things (straining and note flipping) that I love so much in 183. Crank the Glaswerks as he may, I just did not hear any of it. On top of that, the bass was very undefind and congested. The Quinn clone is perfectly balanced from top to bottom, and like the Dumble it was cloned from, is highly articulate and always clear. NO fuzzines to the notes. What I also found is that while I always loved the TRex Roomate reverb, I like it even more now. When connecting Scotts Dumblator and dealy/reverb unit, everything became buzzier and more harsh in comparison to the Trex, which has an incredibly musical sound. One HUGE improvement was replacing my FX cords with Scotts. WHAT a difference! I HAVE to get a set of those bad boys.

Scott put Mullards, GEs and bugle boys in the Glaswerks, and I dug the Mullard the most. (VERY surprising!!) I have tried many, and own a few, and have disliked them in all of my amps.

Scott, please feel free to add all of your comments and thoughts. I know Scott believes with a bunch of tweaking, he could get the amp to sound like the TKT. I say no way. Start over and try again. :P (Kidding)

The truth is Scott like much brighter tones than I do, and his amps represent that. Dumble 183 has more treble than I could ever possibly use. Even with the dark TwoRock speakers and cab, plenty of top end for me, while scott thought it was to dull.

This is all in fun, and no wars! I am posting my honest opinion, and Scott will post his. Just two players who like similar, but different tones. I need to get down to Scotts just to jam with the guy as much as I can. Damn is that guy tasteful!! here is a clip I did a few hors after scott left. My Boss BR900 kicked the bucket a few days ago, so i am back to the dreaded BR600. I am going to invest in a better set up in the next week or so. Hopefully my clips will be of a much higher quality. Clip for Scott and his inspiration.

Sounds like fun!
Did you guys record any clips?

The differences in hearing is probably the main reason some like more treble than others.

The high frequencies are the first to go when the ears get abused and when we get older.

Not saying this is why Scott prefers more treble, just a known fact about hearing.

I don't care for a lot of treble, just good clarity.
I don't like the brittleness a lot of bright caps bring and the type of cap can also affect that.

Presently I am digging polystyrene treble and bright caps.

I do not like a bright cap on when in overdrive at any time.
But on the clean it can add a nice snap to the top end.

What pickup were you playing on that clip? PRS?
There is some weird phasing going on in that clip.

Nice playing!:D

I find most neck humbuckers don't do that well on my D amps.

Bridge pup! It is a Braz Rosewood neck and darker in general. The phase issue may be my recording set up, as I do not use headphones, and the monitor and guitar speaker cab are in the same room. What happens is you get the backing track from the monitors bleeding into the mic for the guitar track. Instant phase problems. Glad you liked the playing. :)

I wonder why people don't put the bright cap on a push pull. Best of both worlds.

Thanks for the playing compliments Tag!

I do agree Tag's clone sounded great at the whisper low levels he likes!! As well as sounding great at louder levels.

Once we dialed in the mule I brought, still far from optimal since mine is setup for one specific volume level playing live with a band, it sounded very good. Tag even agreed. However, it was unuseable at the Tag volume levels. Not only was the master too low, I had the Dumbleator almost off!!!

If I took the bright cap off I am confident that it would be much more Tag approved.....

Mine did have more bass than Tag's. Could be the hotter biased Siemens EL34s, or maybe the 250K level pot I installed. I kind of think maybe the 100K I had on OD2 was better. Definately more bloom on the bass.

Of course, I want to add that for me, hands down my Ojai rig is the bomb. I much prefer it to even the real 183.....

Thats the key Scott! We both like similar but different tones. You tweaked Pinners amp, and his clips are some of the best tonally I have heard. I want to talk to him about his recording set up. Again, great to see you yesterday. Volume wise, I will never, and have never played with 100 watt amps at 1/2 volume in a 10x12 room. Total insanity, and I have no idea how you have any hearing left. My boyfrien...I mean girlfriend thought you were nuts, and she blasts metal all the time. Lol! She thought you were cute by the way.  :)

Lol! On the side of my house where I play, my neighbors house is 15-20 feet from my room. I cant believe they rarely complain. They must be heavy sleeprs.

Glad you likie the tones, thanks for checking them out.
